第二次世界大戦下のイギリス。ペベンシー家の4人の兄妹-ピーター、スーザン、エドマンド、ルーシーは、ロンドンの空襲を逃れて田舎に住むカーク教授に預けられる。古めかしく広大な教授の屋敷は、子供たちにとって最高の探検場所。好奇心旺盛な末っ子のルーシーは、“かくれんぼ”をしているうちに、空き部屋で大きな古い衣装だんすをみつける。見えない力に導かれるかのように衣装だんすに入り、毛皮のコートを押しのけて奥に進むといつしかルーシーは雪に覆われた真夜中の森に立っていた。
