Udo is invisible - no one ever seems to notice him. He makes the most of it, working as a department store detective and living off other people's lives as they never notice him tagging along. Until he meets the one woman who sees him.

Berlin, 1934. Many men are forced to live their hidden homosexuality. Erich, a photographer, has an appointment in his photo studio with Wolfgang, a Nazi soldier, with whom he shares a loving, tumultuous, and passionate relationship. For both of them, this should not be a problem, but appearances deceive.

スタンフォード大学心理学部ではある実験をするため、被験者となってくれる男性を公募した。集まった20名ほどの被験者は無作為に「看守役」と「囚人役」に分けられ、学内に設けられた模擬刑務所に収容された。初めはそれぞれの役を演じるだけの簡単なアルバイトと誰もが考えていた。しかし、実験が進むうち、「看守役」の攻撃的な振る舞いはどんどんエスカレートしていく。それに対して、「囚人役」は卑屈に服従するのみで、まったく抗議できなくなっていく。いつしか、模擬刑務所内は単なる実験の枠組みを越えて、もはや誰にも制御不能の状態に陥っていく……。
