ラスベガスに住むアルコール依存症の母と、家を出て行った家庭内暴力を振るう父との間に生まれた、少年トレバー。 中学1年生(アメリカでは7年生)になったばかりの彼は、社会科の最初の授業で、担当のシモネット先生と出会う。先生は「もし自分の手で世界を変えたいと思ったら、何をする?」という課題を生徒たちに与える。生徒達のほとんどは、いかにも子供らしいアイディアしか提案できなかったが、トレバーは違った。彼の提案した考えは、「ペイ・フォワード」。自分が受けた善意や思いやりを、その相手に返すのではなく、別の3人に渡すというものだ。 トレバーはこれを実践するため、“渡す”相手を探す。仕事に就かない薬物中毒の男、シモネット先生、いじめられている同級生…。 いろいろと試みるものの、なかなかうまくいかず、「ペイ・フォワードは失敗だったのではないか」とトレバーは思い始める。しかし、トレバーの気づかないところで、このバトンは次々に受け渡されていた。

ホワイトハウスの女性スキャンダルを追っていたテレビ局のジェニーは、「エリー」という名に行き当たる。だがそれは女性の名ではなく、「Extinction Level Event（種の絶滅を引き起こす事象）」の略だった。大統領は、1年後に未知の彗星が地球に衝突する可能性があることを公表。これを阻止すべく彗星を核爆発させて軌道修正するプロジェクトが実行されたが、結果は失敗。衝突が刻一刻と迫る中、ついに大統領は地下に選ばれた100万人だけを移住させる計画を発表するのだった。

ロシアから解体処理を行う核弾頭9基が国外に運び出された。その調査にあたるホワイトハウス核兵器密輸対策チームのケリー博士はロシア事情に詳しいデヴォー大佐とコンビを組み、核の足取りを追跡。トルコの鉱山地帯で移送トラックを空から追い詰め8基の核弾頭を回収する。しかし残る1基は犯人一味のボスニア人が別の場所に運び去ったあとだった。ケリーとデヴォーはそれがニューヨークであることをつきとめるのだった。

A cinematographer and his assistant are attracting aspiring young actors and actresses by getting them to try out for their movie. Once filming, the evil cameraman actually kills them. The detective on the case has his hands full trying to help out runaways with stars in their eyes. When some of the people he knows turn up dead, he takes it personally, and as he gets closer to the truth his girlfriend is endangered.

"Nightingales" are eight student nurses living off campus in Southern California in this stylish Aaron Spelling production that ultimately was developed into a short-lived series which aired on NBC at the beginning of 1989. Subsequently edited down to 90 minutes, the film later served as the premiere episode for the series, which was reworked to add Suzanne Pleshette and Barry Newman as stars.
