『やかまし村の子どもたち』の続編。前作の夏休み明けで終わったところから本作は始まり、今度は秋から冬、そして春の訪れを迎えるやかまし村の四季折々の自然を背景に、子供たちののびのびとした暮らしが綴られている。まっ白なクリスマス、夜更しの大晦日、新緑の草原。やかまし村の子どもたちの素敵な1年。やかまし村に、その年はじめての雪が降る。待ちこがれた冬、クリスマスの季節。イブの夜のパーティには、みんなでプレゼントを交換。大晦日には、眠らずに新年が来るのを待った。雪解けの春には、まっ白な子羊が生れる。短いけれど楽しい夏休み、そしてまた秋。子どもたちの楽しい1年は、あっという間に過ぎていく…。

スウェーデンの片田舎（モデルはスモーランド地方）にある、居住世帯が「北屋敷」・「中―」・「南―」の3つしかない集落「やかまし村」と、そこに暮らす三家族、主に子ども達の暮らしを、中屋敷の長女リーサの眼を通して描く。
