「アート・アニメーションの神様」として世界中のアニメーターたちから尊敬されるロシア人アニメーター、ユーリー・ノルシュテイン監督が1971年に手がけた第2作。イワン・イワノフ＝ワノとの共作で、ロシアの作曲家リムスキー・コルサコフ晩年のオペラ「見えざる町キーテジと乙女フェブローニャの物語」に刺激を受けたワノが、ノルシュテイン監督のデビュー作「25日・最初の日」の鮮烈な手法を取り入れるべく共同監督に招いて制作。ロシア聖像画の手法を使い、ケルジェネツ河のほとりで起こったロシアとタタールの戦争と、戦いに巻き込まれた村の様子を描いた。
