以前より、バイキングとドラゴンとの戦いが続いているバーク島。ある日、平凡な少年、ヒックはケガをしたドラゴンのトゥースと偶然に出会う。本来なら敵同士であるヒックとトゥース。しかし、二人の距離は少しずつ縮まり、やがて誰にも知られないように友情を育んでいく。

シュレックは他の人からは怖がられている怪物である。その外見とは裏腹に本質は心の優しい彼は、人里離れた沼地で一人気楽に暮らしていた。ある日、シュレックは森の中でお調子者でおしゃべりなロバのドンキーと出会う。シュレックに怯えて逃げた兵達を見てシュレックが自分を救ってくれたと思い込み嫌がるシュレックについて行く。ドンキーのおしゃべりにうんざりしたシュレックが戻ってみると、彼の沼地には妖精やおとぎ話の主人公達が押し寄せてきていた。
