In the late 1950s, British police officer Tony Aaron resigns from the force after sleeping with Hazel, wife of the man whose house he was supposed to guard. In his new job as a fake private investigator, he helps couples get divorces by photographing Hazel having "affairs" with the husband. When she is murdered during a job, Tony begins having an affair with the dead man's mistress, Angeline, while trying to prove his innocence.
Sue is an Australian teenager in the late '70s, and her life mainly consists of doing what all the other girls do: watching the surfing boys and having sex with those same surfing boys. The girls have to follow lots of strange customs, e.g. do not eat or go to the bathroom when a boy is around. Ugly girls have two choices - being bitches and hating boys, or being generally cheap and looked down upon by everyone. The afternoons are spent on the beaches, in the backseats of cars, or at home-alone parties where sex and alcohol are the main ingredients. Parents and teachers are trying to straighten the kids out, but it's not easy.
Based on the play The Cellist, by Marion Hart, exploring the relationships shared by the residents of a seedy boarding house owned by dour Mrs. Brent. Among them are busker Wanda Fleming, who is flattered by the attention paid her by rebellious pop songwriter wannabe Mickey Hollister, and former schoolmaster James Wallraven, who has been accused of pedophilia and reduced to working as a janitor in an art gallery.
