'72年、ペンシルヴェニア州マディソン。ベーダは、葬儀屋を営むやもめ暮しのハリーと少し老人性痴呆症気味の祖母と暮らす11才の女の子。遺体に死に化粧を施すために美容師のシェリーが雇われ、ハリーとシェリーは次第に接近して行く。近所に住む幼なじみのトーマスと父の恋の邪魔をするベーダだったが効果は全く無し。やがて、ベーダとトーマスの間にも恋心が芽生えるのだが……。
