Kris Kristofferson and Scott Bairstow are hunted fugitives from a Louisiana prison camp who come Two for Texas when they opt to lose themselves in a crowd by joining Sam Houston's Texas Volunteer Army.

Something in his past keeps career Army man John Paul Vann from advancing past colonel. He views being sent to Vietnam as part of the US military advisory force a stepping stone to promotion. However, he disagrees vocally (and on the record) with the way the war is being run and is forced to leave the military. Returning to Vietnam as a civilian working with the Army, he comes to despise some South Vietnamese officers while he takes charge of some of the U.S. forces and continues his liaisons with Vietnamese women.

Judge Nash is highly regarded for his position and decisions in the courtroom. He's approached by a special agent from a government task force investigating corrupt judges and lawyers, and asked to participate in a sting operation. Initially it's against some people Nash has no trouble believing are corrupt, but as the scope of the sting widens to include some of his friends, he tries to get out. When school teacher Harriet Winslow goes to Mexico to teach, she is kidnapped by Gen. Tomas Arroyo and his revolutionaries. An aging American, Ambrose "Old Gringo" Bierce also in Mexico, befriends Gen. Arroyo and meets Harriet. Bierce is a famous writer, who knowing that he is dying, wishes to keep his identity secret so he can determine his own fate. Though he likes Arroyo, Bierce tries to provoke the General's anger whenever possible in an attempt to get himself killed, thus avoiding suffering through his illness. Winslow is intrigued by both Bierce and Arroyo, and the men are in turn attracted to her. She becomes romantically involved with Arroyo.
