Maiko is a 17 year old aspiring picture book writer who was abandoned by her widowed father at the age of 3 and has lived in a foster home ever since. She meets Lisa, also 17, and the two quickly form a bond of understanding as they help each other work out their problems. Lisa holds a grudge against her mother for paying more attention to the men she brings home than her own daughter and Maiko begins to doubt her artistic dream will ever come to fruition after a book editor judges her writing ability harshly.

They had promised each other that they would build a retreat in Shiguretei, but Ushio was hospitalized after a stroke a few days later, and when his wife, Takako, rushed to the hospital, she discovered their love affair, which in reality had not gone beyond kissing. Now, 20 years later, against the advice of her ikebana mentor, Tae rushes to meet Ushio at Shiguretei, only to see him clutching his chest in pain. Eventually, the design and plans for the dream retreat are seen by Tae, but she has to visit Kyoto alone... or maybe she's heading for somewhere else.

Saito Masao reminisces on the days of his youth more than 50 years ago and his forbidden love of his older cousin Tamiko. When he was 15, Tamiko moved in to take care of his sickly mother. The two quickly fell in love with each other but were inevitably forced by their family to live separate lives.

昭和7年。生活苦のため、姉の薫が芸者として売られることになったと知り、仙台の連隊から初年兵の溝口が脱走した上、捜索隊の上官を殺害するという事件が発生。どうか情状酌量をという宮城隊長の嘆願もむなしく、溝口は銃殺刑に処せられ、宮城も朝鮮の守備隊への転任を命じられる。その地で宮城は、芸者となっていた薫とくしくも巡り合う。その後、宮城は薫を妻にするが、皇道派の青年将校となった彼は次第に苦悩の色を深める。

新潟に向かってトラックを走らせていた一番星桃次郎は、深夜の雨の中にたたずむ幻のような美女と出会う。美女は桃次郎に「佐渡で待つ」と言い残して姿を消した。不思議に思いながらも佐渡へ向かった桃次郎は、幻の美女とそっくりな水名子と知り合う。彼女は、桃次郎にけんかを売った運転手ジョーズこと譲次と同郷だった。譲次は自分たちの故郷が原発建設のせいで消えるので腹を立て、一帯で大暴れをしていた。

桃次郎とジョナサンは北海道行きのカーフェリーの上にいた。カーフェリーはトラック野郎にとって最も気の休まる旅なのにジョナサンはラウンジでアルバイト。一方の桃次郎は暇にまかせて女あさり。そんな桃次郎の前に美しい三上亜希子が現れた。一目惚れした桃次郎、目的地の釧路についても亜希子の姿が頭にチラついてはなれない。いつもの悪いクセが出たとジョナサンもお手上げのところへ、ジャジャ馬のような女運転手が出現。“うるさい!”とばかりに桃次郎は彼女を一喝。ところがこの“はまなすのお涼”こと浜村涼子には、北海道一の荒くれトラック野郎“カムチャッカの熊”がすっかり惚れこんでいたからたまらない。案の定、カムチャッカこと大野田太郎佐衛門が凄い剣幕で登場し、桃次郎とたちまち大乱闘となった。

独身の長距離トラック運転手、“一番星”こと桃次郎は、姫路のドライブインでアルバイト中の女子大生、瑛子に一目惚れしてしまう。桃次郎は彼女に気に入られようと無理をして、自分が文学青年であるかのように振る舞うことに。やがて桃次郎のトラックに当たり屋の男、松吉がぶつかるが、松吉は桃次郎の相棒“やもめのジョナサン”こと金造が出会った小学生姉弟の生き別れた父親だった。桃次郎は松吉の再出発に力を貸そうとする。

ケンカっ早い独身の長距離トラック運転手、《一番星》こと星桃次郎と、妻や何人もいる子どもを養うのに忙しい《やもめのジョナサン》こと松下金造。2人は性格も生活の様子も正反対だが固い友情で結ばれた同業者同士。トラックの装飾とハンドルさばきを自慢する桃次郎に、西日本一のトラック野郎を自称する《関門のドラゴン》が挑戦してくる。同じころ、桃次郎は盛岡のドライブインで働くウエートレスの洋子に一目惚れしてしまう。
