남아공에서 태어나 어렸을 때부터 흑인을 차별하는 것이 당연하다고 믿고 자란 백인 제임스 그레고리가 68년 남아프리카 남단의 로벤섬 교도소의 간수로 부임한다. 그의 첫 임무는 ‘공산주의 테러리스트’의 리더 격이라 생각되던 넬슨 만델라를 감시하는 일. 유일하게 흑인들의 언어인 코사(Xhosa) 어를 알아들을 수 있는 사람이라는 이유였다. 제임스는 만델라가 면회 시간에 누구를 만나 어떤 이야기를 하는지 체크해 낱낱이 상부에 보고한다. 그러던 중 만델라의 아들이 자동차 사고로 목숨을 잃는 사건이 발생한다. 이 사건으로 충격을 받은 제임스는 만델라를 더 유심히 지켜본다. 이십여 년의 시간이 흘러 90년대 초, 교도소장 자리에 오른 제임스는 만델라와 개인적으로 많이 가까워져 있다. 그리고 드디어 만델라는 27년의 수감 생활에서 벗어나 자유로운 몸이 되는데…
