1970년대 초 스코틀랜드 해안 지역의 순진한 소녀 베스는 북해 석유 채굴장에서 일하는 자유분방한 얀을 사랑한다. 동네 사람들의 반대에도 불구하고 두 사람은 결혼을 한다. 그러나 얀은 일 때문에 북해로 되돌아가게 된다. 하나님에 대한 자신의 간구에 의해 그들의 사랑이 천국에서 맺어진 것이라 확신하는 베스는 그가 돌아올 날 만을 손꼽아 기다린다. 그러나 얀은 사고로 인해 불구가 되고 만다. 그리고 얀은 베스가 스스로를 일상적인 삶으로부터 차단시킬까봐 걱정한다. 앞으로 침대 신세만 질 것을 알게 된 그는 베스에게 그녀가 애인을 갖는 것이 그의 회복에 도움이 될 것이라고 설득한다.

스토퍼(젠스 알비누스)와 그의 친구들은 삼촌의 저택에 모여 백치 행위에 몰두하며 살게 된다. 아들을 잃어 마음 속에 상처를 입은 카렌(보딜 조르겐센)은 아이의 장례식 전날 우연히 한 레스토랑에서 이들을 만나게 된다. 처음에 백치들의 행동에 불쌍함을 느끼고 합류한 카렌은 이들의 백치 행동이 약속된 게임임을 알고 흥분한다. 멤버들은 분열되기 시작하고 스토퍼는 마지막으로 한 가지 제안을 하게 된다. 자신들의 백치 행위가 진실한 것임을 증명하기 위해 이들을 가장 아끼고 사랑하는 가족들 앞에서 백치 행위를 하는 것이다. 모두의 동의하에 시도하지만 멤버들의 대부분이 실패하고 그룹은 와해된다. 이를 안타깝게 지켜보던 카렌은 멤버 중 한 명을 데리고 자신의 집으로 간다. 굳은 결심을 하고 집으로 돌아온 카렌에게 가족들은 냉담하게 대하지만 결국 카렌은 자신의 진실을 표현한다.

할머니의 연금과 물건을 훔쳐 생활하며 가난하지만 웃음이 끊이지 않는 어느 가족. 우연히 길 위에서 떨고 있는 한 소녀를 발견하고 집으로 데려와 가족처럼 함께 살게 된다. 그런데 뜻밖의 사건으로 가족이 뿔뿔이 흩어지게 되고 각자 품고 있던 비밀과 간절한 바람이 드러나게 되는데…

자신의 명령 불복종을 시인한 삼성 장군 어윈(로버트 레드포드)은 '성(The Castle)'이라 불리는 최고 보안 군 형무소에 수감하게 되는데, '성'의 소장은 부패하고 잔인한 윈터 대령(제임스 갠돌피니)이다. 윈터 대령의 가혹한 통제 아래 옥중 생활을 하던 어윈 장군은 복역중인 다른 군출신 수인들을 규합해서 감옥의 통제권을 장악하고 윈터를 축출할 계획을 세운다. 이제 더 이상 군인이 아닌 그들에게 새로운 전쟁이 시작된다.
