News stories covered include the death of Diana, Princess of Wales (1997); the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas (1963); the coal-tip landslide in Aberfan (1966); the Lockerbie Air Disaster (1988); the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York (2001); the start of Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War (1991); the dramatic end of the Iranian Embassy siege in London (1980); and the announcement of the death of the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (2002).

1959년, 미국의 한 초등학교. 아이들이 그린 미래의 모습이 타임캡슐에 담긴다. 그로부터 50년 후인 2009년. 타임캡슐 속에서 알 수 없는 숫자들이 가득 쓰여진 종이를 발견한 캘럽은 그 종이를 MIT 교수인 아버지 테드(니콜라스 케이지 분)에게 전해준다. 종이에 적힌 숫자들이 지난 50년간 일어났던 재앙을 예고하는 숫자였음을 알게 된 테드는 아직 일어나지 않은 사고를 막기 위해 필사적인 사투를 벌이기 시작하는데…
'데본'(닉 케논 분)은 천부적인 드럼 연주 실력으로 애틀란타 A&T 대학에 특기생으로 입학한 새내기. 밴드부 입단 첫날부터 학교 최고의 퀸카 '라일라'(조 살다나 분)의 관심을 끄는데 성공해 사기충천한 데본은 그 기분을 만끽할 겨를도 없이 선배들의 지도 아래 밴드부 연습을 시작하게 된다. 군사 훈련처럼 혹독한 연습이 계속되는 과정에서 데본은 드럼라인의 리더인 '숀'(레오나르드 로버츠 분) 선배와 사사건건 부딪힌다. 데본의 뛰어난 연주실력에 위협을 느끼고 그를 견제하는 숀과 누구의 충고도 필요 없는 독불장군 데본. 두 사람의 갈등이 깊어진 가운데 맞이한 시즌 오프닝 공연에서 데본은 규정을 어기고 숀의 솔로 연주 순서를 빼앗는다. 며칠 후에는 동문회에서 상대방 학교 밴드부를 자극하여 집단 패싸움을 일으킨다. 이에 데본은 자신을 스카우트하고, 묵묵히 후원해주던 밴드부 단장 '리'(올랜도 존스 분)에 의해 밴드부에서 쫓겨난다. 또한 한창 무르익던 라일라와의 사랑도 위태로워 진다. 그러던 어느날, 데본은 오랫동안 의절하고 지냈던 아버지가 보낸 음악 테이프를 받는다. 아버지가 무명 드러머로 활동하던 시절의 음악을 들으면서 악상을 떠올린 데본은 밴드부 연습실로 향한다. 그곳에서 숀을 만난 데본은 그와 화해하고 팀을 위해 함께 곡을 만든다. 드디어 40년 전통의 밴드 경연대회 날, 데본의 곡으로 참여한 A&T은 동점을 받은 모리슨 브라운 대학과 우승팀을 결정하는 드럼라인 대결을 펼치게 된다. 하지만 밴드 복귀 명령을 받지 못한 데본은 최후의 승부를 준비하는 동료들을 부러운 듯이 바라보고만 있는데...
USB 방송국의 뉴스 앵커 하워드 빌은 과장된 풍자와 독설로 한때 높은 시청률로 인기를 누렸던 인물이다. 그러나 점차 시청률이 떨어지게 되자 방송국의 사장은 빌을 해고하려고 한다. 빌은 그의 직속 상사와 함께 술을 마시는 자리에서 방송 중 자살에 대한 농담을 나누고는 고별 방송에서 시청률 저하 때문에 자살하겠다고 한다. 빌은 방송에서 교체되었지만 가까스로 고별방송을 할 수 있도록 허락받고는 시청자들에게 자신의 처지를 솔직히 털어놓는다. 그의 솔직함에 시청자들이 반응을 보이기 시작하며 시청률이 급등하자 프로그램 기획자인 다이아나는 빌의 상품성을 꿰뚫고는 사장에게 빌을 해고해서는 안된다고 설득한다. 빌은 다시 방송을 하게 되지만 직업적 스트레스로 인한 정신병이 점점 심해져간다.
셀레스트가 TV 드라마에서 화려한 스포트라이트를 받게 되자 몬타나는 이를 시기한다. 몬타나는 프로듀서인 애인 데이빗에게 부탁해 셀레스트를 곤란하게 만드는데 성공한다. 그러던 중 셀레스트의 조카 로리가 스타의 꿈을 안고 상경, '태양은 진다'에 벙어리 소녀 역으로 출연하게 되자 몬타나와 데이빗은 셀레스트를 벙어리 소녀의 살해범으로 몰아부쳐 도중하차시키려 하지만 극작가 로저의 강력한 반대에 부딪혀 실패하고 만다. 그들은 계속해서 셀레스트의 옛 애인 제프리를 캐스팅해 그녀의 감정을 자극한다. 그러나 오히려 제프리가 로리와 사랑에 빠지게 되자, 셀레스트는 로리가 자신과 제프리의 사생아라는 사실을 고백하고, 그 장면이 그대로 TV에 방영되면서 그 자기 고백적인 연기의 사실성 때문에 시청자들에게 또다시 폭발적인 인기를 얻게 된다.
