홀리는 새 남편의 가족을 만나기 위해 작은 시골 마을로 향한다. 예상치 못하게 그곳에서 남편의 전 부인의 실종 사건과 홀리를 불안하게 하는 두 아이들을 마주하게 되는데...

첫 우주 침공으로부터 3년이 지난 지구. 인류는 상처를 이겨내고 조금씩 평범한 일상으로 돌아가고 있다. 그러나 평화도 잠시, 다시 그들이 모습을 드러냈다. 물이 존재하는 그 어느 곳도 안전하지 않은 상황. 하지만 인류는 반드시 이겨낼 것이다!

어느 날 갑자기 러시아 모스크바 도심 한가운데로 거대한 비행 물체가 추락하고, 외계 존재의 등장에 국가는 비상사태에 돌입한다. 한편 추락 현장에서 가까스로 살아남은 ‘율리아’는 죽은 친구의 복수를 위해 비행 물체에 접근한다. 그 과정에서 다시 한번 위험에 빠진 ‘율리아’는 갑자기 나타난 외계 존재의 도움으로 목숨을 건지게 되고, 그들이 지구에 온 목적이 침략이 아님을 알게 된다. 하지만 시간이 지나도 떠나지 않는 외계 존재에 대한 적대감과 분노가 커져가는 ‘툐마’를 비롯한 사람들은 군대를 조직해 전쟁을 준비하고, ‘율리아’는 미스터리한 존재 ‘하콘’과 함께 일어나서는 안될 전쟁을 막기 위해 결국 나서기로 하는데... 인류의 운명을 건 외계 존재와 인류와의 전쟁 일으킬 것인가, 막을 것인가!

혼기에 찬 노리코는 조건이 좋은 혼처를 거부하고 부모 형제와 상의 없이 오빠의 친구이자 아이 딸린 홀아비 켄이치와 결혼하겠다고 선언한다. 갑작스런 노리코의 태도에 가족들은 당황한다. 오즈 야스지로의 대다수 영화들이 산업화와 서구화에 따른 가정의 해체에 관한 것이듯 이 작품도 딸의 결혼으로 대가족이 해체된다는 기본 골격을 따라 몇 개의 에피소드로 연결 된 홈 드라마이다. “스토리 자체보다 더욱 깊은 의미를 지닌 ‘윤회’라든가 ‘무상’이라든가 하는 것을 묘사하고 싶었다”는 오즈의 언급처럼 이 작품에서 스토리나 플롯이 중요한 기능을 하지 않음은 명백하게 드러난다. 일상적인 삶에 대한 세심한 탐구, 이야기의 과감한 생략, 시공간의 독특한 사용, 계속해서 변하는 행동의 리듬을 통해 오즈 특유의 소시민적 관점이 투영된 작품이다.

이탈리아 로마 근교 소도시의 여름. 아이들은 마당 풀장에서 물놀이에 여념이 없고 어른들은 함께 저녁식사를 하는 평범한 여름날의 광경이다. 하지만 정체를 알 수 없는 누군가의 목소리와 카메라의 시선은 그 안에 숨겨진 온갖 나쁜 것들(!)을 드러내기 시작한다. 이웃의 아내를 탐하는 아저씨의 시선, 아버지의 스마트폰 속 음란물을 열심히 연구하는 아들, 임신한 청소녀와 그녀에게 사로잡힌 꼬마.

조부모부터 손자까지 서로를 이름으로 호칭하는 데서 보듯, 이 가족은 개인의 자아를 바탕으로 이루어졌다는 느낌을 준다. 특히 맏이인 앨리스와 동생 루이는 배우와 작가의 예민한 감성 때문인지 20년간 벽을 치고 지냈다. 부모가 죽음에 접어들면서 굳건한 벽 위로 금이 가기 시작한다.

A family is deciding whether to cure their mother's illness through medicine or superstition.
