고등학생인 빌(알렉 윈터)과 테드(키아누 리브스)는 '와일드 스탈린즈'라는 록밴드을 꿈꾸는 몽상가들이다. 둘은 졸업을 위해 역사과목을 통과하지 않으면 안 되는 상황에 처하고, 때마침 예기치 않은 구원자를 만난다. 수수께끼 인물 루퍼스(죠지 카린 분)를 만나 타임머신을 타고 흥미진진한 역사여행을 떠나는 빌과 테드 두 사람은 시간 회로를 통해 고대 그리스로부터 황야의 서부까지 역사적인 인물을 직접 만난다. 소크라테스(토니 스티드먼), 징기스칸, 쟌다르크, 나폴레옹(테리 캐밀러리), 베토벤, 아브라함 링컨, 빌리 더 키드(댄 쇼어), 프로이드 박사 등. 역사 시험을 위해 이들을 타임머신에 태워 현대로 데리고 오는 두 사람. 그런데 현대문명의 눈부신 발달에 취한 과거의 인물들 예상치 못했던 갖가지 사고를 일으킨다. 쇼핑 센터의 전자악기를 몇 시간씩 연주하는 베토벤, 여자를 시귀는 데 여념이 없는 소크라테스와 프로이드. 링컨은 멋진 턱수염으로 사진 모델이 되는데...

분노의 출구로서 헤비메탈과 선악의 의미에 대한 성찰을 담은 영화. 헤라는 오빠가 벌판에서 황당무계한 사고로 처참하게 죽는 현장을 목격한다. 그때부터 그녀는 사랑하는 오빠를 데려간 신을 증오하기 시작하고 오빠가 듣던 헤비메탈 음악에 빠져든다. 록스타의 꿈을 이루기 위해 마을을 떠나겠다고 호언장담하면서도 선뜻 버스에 오르지 못하는 그녀는 마을에서 온갖 문제를 일으키며 악의 화신인 듯 행동한다. 는 아이슬란드에서는 이미 평단의 지지를 받는 라그나르 브라가슨의 신작이다. 이 영화에서 흥미로운 것은 헤비메탈을 보는 시각이다. 일단 헤비메탈은 납득할 수 없는 상황과 대면한 주인공이 신으로부터 등을 돌린 후 주체할 수 없는 분노를 방출하는 출구로 그려진다. 그러다 보니 신의 대항마인 악으로서 묘사된다. 그러나 영화에는 헤비메탈과 신의 공존이라고 할 만한 순간들 또한 존재한다. 특히 영화 말미에 가족들이 헤비메탈의 도움으로 앙금을 털고 한바탕 춤판을 벌이는 장면은 흐뭇하기까지 하다. 유명 밴드들의 음악을 듣는 재미 또한 쏠쏠한 이 영화는 결국 헤비메탈의 손을 들어주는 것 같다.
