1979년 뉴욕. 바티칸 교황청 창 밖으로 달 위를 질주하는 혜성이 목견 된다. 같은 날 한 병원에서 여자 아이가 태어난다. 교황청은 혜성이 달 위를 질주하는 날 사탄의 씨를 잉태할 아이가 태어날 것이라는 예언자의 기록에 따라 중대한 결정을 내려야만 한다. 교황은 믿음을 갖고 아이를 지켜주라고 지시한다. 그러나 강경파는 아이를 죽여야 한다고 주장한다. 한편, 병원에서 아이를 빼돌린 '악마의 사제단'은 아이에게 독사의 피를 먹이는 의식을 치르고 있다. 1999년 뉴욕. 아내와 딸을 범죄조직에게 잃은 전직 형사 케인(Jericho Cane: 아놀드 슈왈츠네거 분)은 인생을 체념한 듯 알코올에 의지해서 살고 있다. 현재 그의 신분은 사설 경호원! 경호 의뢰인을 호송하던 중 목숨을 잃을 뻔한 케인은 몸을 날려 저격범을 뒤쫓는다. 정체가 신부였던 저격범은 "곧 사탄이 나타난다!"는 말을 외치며 실신한다. 저격범의 아지트를 수색하던 중 케인은 한 여자의 사진을 발견한다. 그녀의 이름은 크리스틴! 크리스틴은 매일같이 사탄으로부터 겁탈당하는 악몽에 시달린다. 크리스틴은 케인의 보호를 받게 되며 한 추기경으로부터 크리스틴이 바로 사탄이 노리고 있는 여자라는 충격적인 사실을 알게 된다. 그렇다면 사탄은 왜 그녀를 뒤쫓는 것일까? 스텔라와 조, 롭 등 한 집에서 기거하고 있는 룸메이트들은 클럽에 모여 파티를 즐긴다. 춤추고 술을 마시던 그들은 우연히 가장 짜릿했던 경험에 대해 이야기하게 되는데 그들 중 누군가 심령 게임을 하던 때가 가장 짜릿했다고 털어놓는다. 이에 그들은 모두 호기심에 이끌려 외딴 창고로 찾아들어가고 밤 12시가 되는 무렵 심령 게임을 시작한다. 게임을 리드하던 루스는 게임 시작전 주의 사항을 이야기하는데 그것은 자신이 게임을 끝내기 전에 유리컵에서 손가락을 떼어내면 안된다는 것이다. 그럴 경우 그들이 불러낸 영혼이 왔던 곳으로 돌아갈 수 없기 때문이라는 것. 게임이 진행되고 유리잔은 그들의 질문에 맞춰 빠르게 움직인다. 그리고 그 유리잔이 가리킨 그들의 미래는 죽음, 그의 이름을 묻는 질문에는 D ? J ? I ? N ? N이라는 글자를 지적한다. 그 후 컵이 빠르게 돌기 시작하자 갑자기 리암이 컵을 바닥에 내리쳐 부숴 버리고는 어딘가로 달려간다. 루스를 비롯한 친구들은 찜찜한 마음을 가지고 집으로 돌아오는데 그 이후 그들은 하나씩 죽어가기 시작한다. 애니와 스텔라가 죽은 후 그들은 하숙집의 주인인 베커가 디진에 관련된 기사를 모으고 있었던 것을 알고 그를 의심한다. 그 동안에도 죽음은 계속되고 조와 웹스터가 집에서 의문의 죽음을 당한다. 디진은 롭의 몸에 들어가 친구들을 하나씩 죽이고 있었던 것이다. 결국 혼자만 살아남게 된 리암은 자신의 아버지가 디진을 불구덩이 속으로 던져버린 장본인이라는 것을 알게 되고 베커가 자신을 돕고 있었음을 깨닫지만 그때는 너무 늦은 상태. 디진은 리암의 몸 속으로 들어가 리암의 아버지에게 복수를 한 후 세상 속으로 유유히 사라져간다.

교통사고로 하나밖에 없는 손주를 잃은 노부부 오드리와 헨리는 깊은 슬픔에 빠진다. 의사인 헨리는 손자 잭슨을 되살리기 위해 임신한 환자를 납치해 혼을 부르는 의식을 치른다. 그러나 이 집에 찾아온 영혼은 잭슨 하나가 아니다. 노부부와 임신부는 유령들에게서 벗어나기 위해 혼신의 노력을 다해야 한다. (2021년 제25회 부천국제판타스틱영화제)
