불미스러운 일로 고향을 떠났던 에런은 친구 루크의 장례식에 참석하기 위해 20년 만에 고향을 찾는다. 가족을 죽이고 자살한 것으로 보이는 루크. 유가족의 요청으로 사건을 파헤치던 에런은 여자친구였던 엘리의 죽음에도 석연치 않은 부분이 있음을 알게 되는데...

뉴욕의 예술 고등학교를 배경으로 스타가 되기를 꿈꾸는 학생들의 삶과 갈등을 그린 뮤지컬 영화이다. 코코(이렌느 카라)를 비롯한 예술 고등학교의 학생들은 뚜렷한 목표의식 없이 그저 화려한 스타의 모습을 동경한다. 코코도 스타가 되기 위해 노력하지만 생각처럼 쉽게 인기를 얻지 못한다. 하지만 꿈을 버리지 않고 재능을 발휘하는 노력을 계속한다. 그러면서 학생들은 목표를 찾는다. 화려한 무대 뒤에 감추어진 젊은이들의 숨은 노력과 땀으로 이룬 결실을 보여주는 영화이다.

21살의 프로댄서 스캇(Scott Hastings: 폴 머큐리오 분)은 엄격한 무도장의 제1규칙(볼륨 댄스는 허리 아래로만 춰야함)을 무시하고 자신만의 스텝으로 춤을 추는 위반을 범한다. 곧 협회의 징계가 따르고 파트너 리즈(Liz Holt: 지아 카리데스 분)에게 조차 버림 받는다. 6살때부터 키워온 자신의 야망이자 부모(셜리(Shirley Hastings: 팻 톰슨 분 / 더그(Doug Hastings: 베리 오토 분)의 꿈인 환태평양 대회에서 우승은 물거품이 된 것이다. 어떤 여성 댄서도 그의 파트너가 되어주려 하지 않기 때문. 모든 희망이 사라졌다고 생각했을 때, 프랜(Fran: 타라 모리스 분)이 나타난다. 미운 오리 새끼로 취급을 받는 댄스 초보자인 프랜의 집요한 설득으로 스캇은 의욕을 되찾고 뻣뻣한 그녀를 일류댄서로 다듬어 간다. 한편 댄스 협회장인 배리(Barry Fife: 빌 헌터 분)는 스캇과 프랜이 조직한 이단자 커플을 해체시키려 압력을 가한다. 프랜과 함께 자신들만의 스텝으로 사랑의 룸바를 추기로 한 환태평양 전날밤, 배리는 스캇 부모의 슬픈 과거를 폭로하며 자기가 정해준 파트너와 협회규칙에 따른 춤을 추라 종용한다. 양자택일에 걸린 스캇은 과거로부터 아버지를 구하기 위해 프랜에게 등을 돌리기로 한다. 그러나 대회시작 직전, 아버지에 의해 진실이 밝혀진다. 모든 것이 2대에 걸친 배리의 음모였음이. 자신의 느낌과 본능대로 춤을 추는 그들에게 관중들의 환호가 터지는 바로 그때 배리가 개입해 음악을 끄고 두 사람의 퇴장을 명한다. 그들이 퇴장 인사를 할때 스캇의 아버지가 눈물을 흘리며 박수를 치기 시작하고 대회장을 울린다. 박수는 삽시간에 퍼지고 대회 중지를 항의하는 6천명의 관중들, 드디어 스캇의 열정적인 스텝들이 쏟아져 나온다. 댄서로서 상처를 안고 살아온 아버지 더그가 어머니 셜리에게 화해의 손을 내민다.

캐나다의 한 캠프장에서 20년전 야영했던 친구들이 다시 모인다. 아름다운 온타리오 주 알곤킨 주립공원내의 타마콰 캠프장에서 어른이 된 친구들은 오랜만의 해후를 반가워한다. 캠프장 주인이며 교관인 엉클 루(알란 아킨 분)가 20년 전 캠프장 전성시대의 야영 동창생을 불러 마지막 여름을 함께 나누려고 한 것. 그 때의 인연으로 결혼하게 된 켈리(줄리 와너 분)와 매튜(빈센트 스파노 분), 사업으로 성공한 매튜의 사촌 브래드(케빈 폴락 분), 독신인 제니퍼(엘리자베스 퍼킨스 분), 교통사고로 남편을 잃은 베스(다이안 레인 분), 플레이보이처럼 인생을 즐기는 제이미(맷 크레이븐 분)와 그의 젊은 약혼녀 그웬(킴벌리 윌리암스 분), 20년 전 말썽을 피워 캠프장에서 쫓겨난 잭(빌 팩스톤 분)이 다시 만나 추억을 되살리며 캠프장이 문을 닫게 된 것을 아쉬워한다. 며칠이 지나자 부부간의 문제, 약혼자끼리의 문제, 여자들 사이의 질투 등 문제가 생기기 시작한다. 엉클 루는 노련하게 젊은이들이 고민과 문제를 푸는 것을 도와준다. 예정된 일주일이 끝날 무렵 문제는 해소되고 서로 더 잘 이해하고 성숙해진 어른 야영객들이 떠나자, 루는 새로 맺어진 잭과 베스 한 쌍에게 캠프장을 넘겨준다. 캠프장은 문을 닫지 않게 된 것이다.
