양치기 고아출신인 마호메트는 나이 40에 이르러 어느날 갑자기 산속으로 들어갔다가 사흘만에 내려온 후 신은 한명뿐이며 그가 바로 하나님이고, 자신은 하나님의 사자라고 주장한다. 서기 7세기인 당시의 메카는 거상들의 중심이 되어 3백여개의 우상을 섬기며 도시를 다스리고 있었으나 마호메트의 주장은 엄청난 충격이었다. 거상들은 당연히 마호메트와 그 추종자들을 박해했고 이들은 숨어서 전도를 하다가 끝내 견디지 못하고 메디나로 쫓겨난다. 마호메트의 교리에 끌려 합류하는 사람이 늘어나자 불안을 느낀 메카의 거상들은 군대를 보내 마호메트 일행을 공격한다. 평화를 신봉하는 이슬람 교도들도 끝내는 이들과 맞서 싸운다. 함자가 이끄는 이슬람 군대는 숫적인 열세에도 불구하고 메카 병력을 물리친다.
