When the sheriff learns of Seth's harboring a fugitive, a confrontation looms. Relationships between fathers and their children dominate the subplots.

영화는 마약을 매개로 만나게 된 스파이더, 로스, 그리고 쿡이라 불리는 사나이 세 사람이 벌이는 이야기이다. 이들은 마약을 통해 만났지만 특별히 그와 관련한 직업에 종사하는 것도 아니며, '화이트 트래쉬(백인 쓰레기)'의 모습을 보여주는 캐릭터들이다. 감독은 이들 세 사람과 그들의 주변 인물들의 행태를 통해 아메리카의 어두운 측면을 살펴나간다. 약을 제조하며 3류 모텔에서 레슬링 중계나 보는 쿡, 가끔 스트립 클럽에서 일하는 그의 연인 니키, 그리고 폰섹스나 하며 떠벌리기나 하는 스파이더와 별 생각없는 그의 연인 쿠키, 지저분하며 할 일없이 여기저기 빈둥거리다가 여자를 꼬시고 그 여자에게 기이한 집착을 보이는 로스. 이들은 모두 어딘가 한 군데 이상 부족하며 상실한 채로 살고 있는 인물들이다.
