일촉즉발의 이라크. 미해병대 소속의 플레이크, 러쉬, 샐리, 맥코이, 가브리엘은 다름없이 검문소를 지키고 있다. 폭탄도 총격전도 일상이 되어가는 이들에게 낮에 봤던 이라크 소녀는 새로운 화제거리다. 어느 밤, 카드놀이를 하며 맥주를 마시던 5명의 군인들은 술기운에 급기야 무기를 무장한 채 그 소녀의 집으로 향하는데...

공포 영화를 찍으러 인적 드문 야외로 나간 대학생들이 우연히 좀비를 만나게 되고, 이후 촬영은 예측불가능한 방향으로 흘러간다. 친구, 애인 혹은 가족까지 언제 좀비가 되어 덮칠 지 모르는 상황에서 주인공들은 현장을 전 세계에 중계하겠다는 일념으로 카메라를 손에서 놓지 못한다. 흥행과 관계 없이 속편이 계획되어 있는 작품으로 극도의 잔인함 속에서 인간성에 대한 새로운 고찰을 보여준다.

한밤중에 일하는 사람들을 인터뷰하는 리얼 TV 프로그램의 리포터 안젤라와 카메라맨 스캇은 촬영을 위해 LA의 911구조대를 방문한다. 구조대원들의 일상을 취재하던 중, 한통의 구조요청 전화가 걸려오고, 소방대원들을 따라 현장인 다운타운의 작은 아파트에 도착한 안젤라와 스캇은 사건현장을 최대한 밀착취재하고자 한다. 그곳에서 일행이 발견한 것은 피로 범벅이된채 어둠속에 서 있는 노파. 구조대원이 그녀를 도우려 다가간 순간, 갑자기 노파가 대원을 공격하는 일이 발생한다. 심상치 않은 일들이 일어나고 있음을 깨달은 일행들은 노파와 부상당한 구조대원을 데리고 건물을 빠져나가려 하지만, 당국의 폐쇄조치로 출입문은 이미 잠긴 상태이다. 건물안의 사람들은 하나둘 좀비로 변하고, 변하지 않은 사람들은 살기위해 필사적으로 도주한다. 안젤라와 스캇의 카메라는 쉴틈없이 이 모든 상황들을 찍어나가는데...

'지옥으로 가는 길'이란 제목이 붙어있는 그 필름에는 기록영화팀이 원시의 생활 속에서 차츰 잔인한 본능을 드러내고 평화롭게 살고 있던 원주민들을 잔인하게 살해하는 모습이 담겨있었는데...
