일정한 스토리텔링을 가진 픽션 드라마가 아닌 마돈나의 무대공연과 그 이면 세계를 그리고 있으므로 뚜렷한 줄거리 없이 다큐멘터리(세미) 형식을 취하고 있다. 우리가 보통 상식으로 생각하고 있는 퇴폐, 외설 시비 선상에서만 인식되어왔던 마돈나에 대해 이 영화는 그녀의 인간적인 고뇌와 사랑, 그녀만이 갖는 독특한 표현 형식 및 예술세계에 대해 보다 진지하게 접근하고 있다. 성장기에 예술적 자극을 주었던 친구, 공포로 다가온 엄마의 죽음, 조금 엉뚱한 오빠, 보수적인 아버지, 그리고 사랑의 진실을 일깨워 준 올리버. 이런 얘기들이 그녀의 일본, 캐나다, 유럽 공연과 병행되며 하나씩풀려 나간다. 특히 여기선 마돈나 자신의 어떤 특정 상황을 강조 하거나 감추어서 미화하지 않는다. 자신이 생각하고 행동하며 말하는 모든 것들이 꾸밈없이 그대로 담겨져 있다. 세계의 일반 대중을 열광케 하는 빅 스타로서, 혹은 금세기 새로운 공영 문화의 주관자로서가 아니라, 가장 보편적인 인간으로서의 한계상황과 자유와 새로움에 도전하는 한 예술가의 집념, 고독, 아픔을 그리고 있다. 결국 이 영화는 마돈나의 ‘용기있는 고백’이다. 그리고 인간 마돈나의 진실한 삶의 추적이다. 카메라는 집요하게 구강 검사를 하는 마돈나의 입 속까지 파고든다. 그래서 조금은 그릇되게 인식되고 있는 허구와 망상, 그녀에 대한 편견을 송두리채 앗아간다. 이 영화에서 보여주는 가수 마돈나의 모습에서 우리는 본능적이고 가식적인 표리성 사고에서 벗어나 보다 진실되고 진취적인 인간적 동질성을 재확인하게 될 것이다.

1979년, 니카라과는 소모사 일가의 독재가 50년이나 계속되는 가운데 전국에서 반독재 시위가 줄을 잇고 대량학살을 감행하는 정부군에 대치가 팽팽한 내란 상태. 여기에 뛰어든 미국인 기자 두 명과 여성 리포터의 활약상이 그려진다. 누가 진짜 적인지, 누가 진정한 우군인지 한 치 앞을 내다 볼 수 없었던 니카라과 동란 현장. 소모사 일가의 독재가 50년이나 계속되는 가운데 전국에서는 독재 반대의 시위가 줄을 잇고 반정부 좌익, 게릴라의 투쟁과 대량학살을 감행하는 정부군의 대치가 팽팽한 내란 상태였다. 여기에 뛰어든 미국인 기자 3명, 일류 사진기자인 러셀(Russell Price: 닉 놀테 분)과 타임지 기자 알렉스(Alex Grazier: 진 핵크만 분), 그리고 방송국 여성 리포터 클레어(Claire: 조안나 캐시디 분)는 세계 어느곳이건 전쟁이 터졌다하면 나타나는 민완기자이며 서로 친숙한 사이였다. 또한 알렉스와 클레어는 연인 사이기도 했다. 세 기자는 한 조가 되어 게릴라의 지도자이며 민중의 영웅으로 추앙받는 인물을 취재하기도 하고 소모사 대통령과의 단독 인터뷰도 추진한다. 그러는 가운데 애인이 바뀌어 러셀과 클레어가 연인 관계에 접어들기도 한다. 그 무렵 러셀은 기자로서의 사명감을 시험받는 사건에 직면한다. 정부군에 피살된 민중의 영웅을 살아있는 것처럼 꾸며달라는 많은 사람들의 부탁을 받은 것이다. 그것은 난처한 일이었다. 기자로서 거짓 정보를 쓰느냐, 민중의 역사적 진실을 위해 희생하느냐?

뉴욕 상류사회, 주인공들은 광고회사 디자이너 로라와 그의 보호자격인 칼럼니스트 왈도, 그리고 그의 죽음을 수사하는 과묵한 민완형사 마크등 3인. 로라가 자기 집에서 얼굴이 무참히 일그러진채 살해되면서 마크가 사건 수사를 맡는다. 마크는 펜을 독검처럼 휘두르는 왈도가 로라를 뉴욕광고계의 실력자로 키웠으며 로라를 광적으로 사랑하나 로라는 다른 남자를 사랑했다는 사실을 알아내고 왈도를 유력한 용의자로 지목한다.

새로운 소재를 찾지 못해 고민하던 소설가 윤희는, 베트남에 있는 친구 서연으로부터 흥미로운 '므이'의 전설을 듣게 된다. 한동안 연락이 두절되었던 서연으로부터 들은 '므이'의 기묘한 전설과 비밀은 단번에 윤희의 마음을 사로 잡지만 왠지 모르게 서연을 만나러 가야 된다는 부담이 윤희를 망설이게 한다. 그러나, 서연이 계속적으로 보내오는 초상화에 대한 자료들은 결국 윤희의 마음을 뒤흔들고, 100여년 전부터 전해 내려오는 초상화의 비밀을 찾아, 오랫동안 만나지 못했던 친구 서연의 초대에 응하기 위해 베트남으로 항하게 되는데… 베트남에 도착한 윤희는 예전과 달리 화려하게 변한 서연의 모습에 적잖이 놀라지만, 오히려 서연은 당황하는 윤희를 반갑게 맞이한다. 그럴수록 과거 서연과의 서먹한 관계로 인해 어색하기만 한 윤희는 비밀의 초상화 므이의 자료수집에 더욱 집착하게 된다. 그러나 서연과 함께 '므이'의 비밀을 하나 둘씩 파헤칠수록 점점 주변의 상황은 이상하게 변하고 서연에게도 왠지 모를 사건들이 생긴다. 이제 그토록 윤희를 사로잡은 이국적인 베트남은 끔찍한 곳으로 변하고 초상화 '므이'의 비밀은 점점 미궁 속으로 빠져들게 되는데…

청각장애인을 부모로 둔 체이니(제임스 캐그니 분)는 극장에서 판토마임과 막간 사이의 촌극 연기자로 일하고 있었다. 그러던 어느 날, 클레바 클라이튼(도로시 말론 분)을 만난 체이니는 그녀를 조수로 채용하게 된다. 함께 일하면서 사랑에 빠진 두 사람은 결혼까지 하게 되지만 체이니가 자신의 양친이 청각장애인이라는 사실을 밝히자, 클레바는 혐오감을 감추지 않는다. 심지어는 아들을 낳고 나서도 아기가 청각 장애일 거라며 쳐다보지도 않으려 한다. 아기가 정상이었음에도 클레바는 불안 증세를 보였고, 체이니가 극장에서 성공을 거듭할수록 그녀의 증세는 더해간다. 결국 클레바는 체이니와 어린 아들을 남겨두고 집을 나가버리고, 체이니는 부양할 돈이 없어 아들마저 다른 가정에 빼앗기고 만다. 결국 체이니는 아들을 되찾겠다는 일념으로 헐리우드를 행한다. 그 곳에서 그는 자신의 재능을 이용해 할 수 있는 일이라면 무엇이든 서슴지 않고 모두 다 해낸다.

Contrasting the prestigious history of the seaport with the present the film sketches a portrait of the city, built on 42 hills, with its wealth and poverty, its daily life on the streets, the stairs, the rack railways and in the bars. Although the port has lost its importance, the rich past is still present in the impoverished city. The film echoes this ambiguous situation in its dialectical poetic style, interweaving the daily life reality (of 1963) with the history of the city and changing from black and white to colour, finally leaving us with hopeful perspective for the children who are playing on the stairs and hills of this beautiful town.
