5세기 말의 중국. 천하가 혼란해지자 병역을 도피하여 위타사로 들어간 적명기는 마귀를 소탕하려는 효여대사를 만나 마귀들과 결전을 벌인다. 불행하게도 효여대사가 혈신독에 중독되어 위태롭게 되고 혈신자가 음기로 변해 마귀의 몸을 통해 원영으로 환생한다. 이 원영을 제압하기 위해 천도봉에 있는 자청쌍검이 필요하므로 검을 찾아 나선다. 효여대사를 데리고 요지선보의 치료를 받으러가서 독을 제거하나 적명기의 부주의로 정인이 혈독에 중독된다. 그러나 보주의 치료를 받지 못하고 중독된 채 탈출하게 된다. 적명기와 일진등은 천도봉에 도착해 우여곡절 끝에 자청쌍검을 손에 넣는다. 쌍검을 들고 원영을 찾아가는 도중에 혈독에 중독되어 성격이 변한 정인의 제지를 받게되나 사랑의 힘으로 독을 해독시켜 자청쌍검이 원영을 제거하므로 천하가 다시 태평서세를 누리게 된다.
