모험심 가득 찬 요시 긴스버그는 남미 오지여행 중 우연히 교사인 마커스, 사진작가 케빈을 만나 아마존에 가보자는 설득에 넘어가 여행을 결심한다. 모든 것이 베일에 싸인 칼이라는 이방인의 가이드로 예측할 수 없는 정글 여행을 떠나는데···

건축 기사인 빌 마캄은 아마존댐 건설 중 정글에서 일곱살난 아들 토미를 잃어버리고 고독한 탐색 작업을 한다. 10년간의 추적 끝에 토미의 실종이 인디오와 관계있음을 알게 된 그는 아마존을 탐색하다 어느 큰 폭포앞에 이르른다. 그 때 갑자기 기분 나쁜 소리가 들려오고 인디오들이 빌을 습격하기 시작하지만, 어디선가 날아온 화살이 그를 구한다.

아름답고 푸른숲 펀걸리에는 요정들과 갖가지 동물들이 오염되지 않은 자연을 가꾸며 풍요롭고 재미있게 살아간다. 그러던 어느날 호기심이 많은 요정 크리스타가 마법사 매지의 당부를 어기고 펀걸리 밖의 숲까지 날아간다. 그곳에선 검은 연기를 내뿜는 기계를 동원한 벌목꾼들이 나무를 베어내고 있다. 신기한듯 두리번 거리던 크리스타는 잭이란 소년과 부딪치게 되는데,그만 실수로 잭을 조그만 요정처럼 만들어 버린다. 펀걸리로 돌아온 잭과 크리스타는 아름다운 자연을 벗하며 행복한 시간을 갖는다. 한편 벌목꾼들은 펀걸리 숲까지 다가와 나무들을 베어내기 시작한다. 게다가 공해와 쓰레기를 먹고 자란 괴물 헥서스까지 나타나 펀걸리는 삽시간에 지옥처럼 변하고, 잭과 크리스타는 숲과 동물들을 지키기 위해 목숨을 걸고 싸우는데...

생화학자 캠블 박사는 애스턴 재단의 후원으로 남미의 열대림에서 연구를 진행하고 있다. 그는 재단의 입김으로 자신의 연구가 방해받지 않기 위해 3년 동안 재단과의 연락을 두절하고 있었다. 어느날 캠블박사는 이 원주민 부족에서만 서식하는 약초를 발견하여 이를 이용해 인류를 암으로부터 해발시킬 수 있는 암치료제를 만들어 낸다. 하지만 처음으로 제조한 샘플만이 약효가 있고 그 나머지는 효과가 없다는 것을 알게 되고 추가적인 자원이 필요함을 깨닫게 된다. 이에 캠블박사는 3년간 연락을 끊었던 재단에 연구조수와 실험장비를 요청하게 된다. 이러한 사실을 모르는 재단은 고지식한 여성 생화학자 크레인박사를 파견하여 캠블박사의 연구 진행 결과를 검토하여 연구비 지원 여부를 결정짓도록 한다. 불쾌한 첫 대면 후 캠블박사와 크레인박사는 사사건건 부딪히게 되나 캠블박사가 암치료제를 만들어냈음을 확인한 크레인박사는 그의 연구에 적극 동참하게 되고, 이런 속에서 서로에 대한 불쾌한 감정은 서로에 대한 존경으로 변해가고 서서히 서로에 대한 사랑을 확인해 나간다. 둘은 문제 해결을 위해 최선을 다하나 이미 정부의 개발 계획에 따라 약초가 서식하는 지역에 도로가 나게 되고 이로 인해 그들의 실험은 시간이 촉박한데...
