신생 E.S.U.의 풋볼팀은 2년 연속 결승진출이 좌절되자 동문들의 재단 지원금이 줄어들고 학교측에서는 감독에게 책임을 묻는다. 감독 윈터스는(Coach Winters: 제임스 칸 분)은 궁여지책으로 고교 스타인 도넬(Darnell Jefferson: 오마 에프스 분)을 스카웃 해온다. 지옥 훈련을 하고 새로운 시즌을 맞는 ESU팀, 처음에는 쿼터백 조 케인(Joe Kane: 크레이그 셔퍼 분)을 중심으로 연전연승하며 잘나갔으나 주전선수들의 부상과 학업성적 미달이 문제가 된다. 특히 쿼터백 조 케인이 음주운전으로 빠지면서부터 하향곡선을 그리게 된다. 대학 최고의 볼 게임에 진출할 수 있는 마지막 시합을 앞두고 징계가 풀린 조 케인은 부진을 면치 못했으나 마지막 몇분을 남겨놓고 투혼을 발휘하여 대 역전극을 이끌어 내고 결승에 진출하게 되는데...
