북극권에서 순록의 숫자가 급격하게 줄어드는 일이 발생한다. 정부는 그 원인이 늑대라고 믿고 늑대 박멸 대책을 세우기 위한 연구를 위해 타일러 박사를 북극으로 보낸다. 연구 장비를 가지고 누트색에 도착한 타일러 박사는 로지라는 도박꾼이 운전하는 비행기를 타고 북극으로 가서 그 곳에서 만난 우텔이라는 에스키모의 도움으로 연구를 시작하게 된다. 타일러 박사는 늑대의 생활을 관찰하지만 늑대가 순록을 모두 먹어 없앴다는 증거는 발견하지 못한 채 대신 늑대가 쥐를 먹는 것을 보고 식량이 떨어진 박사도 쥐를 먹으면서 지낸다. 그러던 중 타일러 박사는 우텍과 그의 양아들인 마이크를 만나서 에스키모에게 전해 내려오고 있는 늑대와 순록에 대한 전설을 듣게 된다. 처음에 북극에는 순록이 많아서 에스키모의 생활에 도움을 주었는데 순록 중에서 건강한 것만을 사냥하다 보니 남은 순록들은 점점 약해졌다. 그래서 약하고 병든 순록을 없애기 위해 에스키모의 여신이 보낸 것이 늑대라는 것이다. 가을이 되서 본격적인 사냥철이 시작되자 문드리 지역으로 간 타일러 박사는 늑대가 대순록을 사냥하는 것을 보게 된다. 타일러 박사는 거기서 전설에서처럼 늑대가 병이 깊이 든 순록만 사냥하는 것을 확인하는데...

알랜(Alan: 숀 아스틴 분)은 집 안에서만 있는 소심하고 내성적인 소년이다. 그런 아들이 걱정되는 알랜 아버지는 여름방학을 이용해 캠핑 지도원 빅을 딸려서 6주간 캠핑을 보낸다. 알랜은 마지 못해 미치(Mitch: 조나단 워드 분), 크리스(Chris: 맷 애드러 분), 조지(George: K.C. 마텔 분)와 함께 한조가 되어 캠핑에 참가하는데, 빅(Vic: 케빈 베이컨 분)은 소심하고 겁이 많은 알랜에게 특히 관심을 보인다. 외나무 줄다리 건너기, 맨손으로 고기잡기, 암벽타기 등의 모험이 계속되는데, 매번 알랜이 항상 겁을 먹고 주저주저하자, 빅은 알랜의 소심한 성격을 고쳐주기 위해 맹훈련을 시킨다. 빅은 악마의 이빨이라는 암벽 타기에서 줄에 대롱대롱 매달려 있는 알랜을 혼자 남겨두고 떠난다. 죽을 힘을 다하여 돌아온 알랜은 집에 가겠다고 고집한다. 친구들도 빅이 너무하다고 생각, 알랜에게 동조하는데...

카시 삼부작의 첫 작품. ‘코야니스카시’란 호피 족 인디언 말로 ‘균형 깨진 삶'라는 뜻이다. 뚜렷한 내러티브도 대사도 없이 그저 음악과 영상으로만 되어 있는 이 영화는, 고대 인디언들이 그린 벽화에서 시작한다. 이후 광활하고 경외로운 대자연, 그리고 인간이 약간의 가공을 가한, 노동하는 인간과 함께 하는 자연을 그린다. 이후 정신없이 빠른 속도로 굴러가는 도시를 묘사하는 씬으로 오면, 자연과 완전히 등을 진 채 오롯이 인간이 만든 인공적인 환경 속에서 속도와 파괴에 지배당하는 인간의 도시문명이 대비된다. 도시 문명의 속도는 점점 심해져 클라이막스에서는 거의 기하학적 무늬로 표현되며 현기증을 준다.
