외형은 갱스터 영화이지만, 가혹한 운명으로부터 벗어나지 못하는 한 인간의 비극을 그리고 있는 영화이다. 체(Che)는 동생을 대신해 교도소에서 3년간을 보낸 뒤, 고향인 난팡가오(Nanfangao)로 돌아온다. 하지만, 과거와 달라진 것은 없다. 연인 페이(Pei)는 충격으로 실어증에 걸렸고, 어머니를 버리고 일본으로 갔던 아버지는 다시 난팡가오로 돌아와 토착세력과 영역다툼을 벌인다. 이 벗어날 수 없는 구렁텅이에서 체에게 위안이 되는 것은 어머니에 대한 기억이다. 결국 그는 자신이 지옥과도 같은 이 모든 상황을 정리하기 위해 스스로 악마가 되기로 결심한다. 난팡가오 주변의 섬 주민들은 나비를 악마의 영혼이라고 믿는다. 연약하고 아름다워 보이는 나비에 대한 원주민들의 생각은 첸에게 매우 역설적으로 보인다. 오히려, 나약함과 강인함, 선과 악의 얼굴을 동시에 지닌 첸에게 나비는 어머니의 영혼처럼 느껴진다. 그리고, 원주민들이 주로 모여 사는 난팡가오는 이 암울하고 비극적인 공간으로서의 배경의 역할에 너무나 잘 어울린다. -김지석(수석 프로그래머)

리엔칭은 23살 미얀마 여성이다. 그녀는 메콩 강의 은밀한 경로를 따라 여러 명의 미얀마인들과 함께 태국으로 밀입국하였다. 합법적인 주민증이 없는 리엔칭은 허름한 식당의 저임금 접시닦이로 일을 시작한다. 리엔칭과 같이 밀입국한 남자 구오는 리엔칭에게 호감을 갖고 그녀를 임금이 더 높은 방직공장으로 안내한다. 리엔칭과 구오는 방직공장에서 같이 일하지만, 리엔칭은 장차 주민증을 얻어 방콕과 타이완으로 가서 더 좋은 일자리를 갖는 것을 꿈꾼다. 리엔칭은 번번이 사기를 당하면서도 주민증을 얻기 위해 시골 변두리 사무소를 찾고, 구오는 그런 그녀를 이해하지 못한다. 주민증에 집착하는 리엔칭은 더 많은 돈을 모으기 위해 매춘에 나서고, 이 사실을 아는 구오의 분노는 폭발 직전에 이른다. 드디어, 천신만고 끝에 주민증을 받게 된 리엔칭 앞에 구오가 칼을 들고 나타난다.

1963년, 중국의 작은 마을 부용진. 두부 가게를 경영하는 오금은 마음씨 착한 남편이 있고 마을 사람들도 모두 명랑한 그녀를 좋아한다. 이 마을에는 미곡 관리소 주인인 고연산과 땅 주인인 거리의 문제아 왕추신, 그리고 최고의 인텔리지만 극우로 낙인찍혀 바보처럼 살아가는 진서전 등이 있다. 오금은 피나는 고생 끝에 돈을 모아 가게를 신축한다. 그러나 정치 공작 반장으로 승진한 이국형에 의해 부르조아로 몰리게 된다. 잠시 친척 집으로 몸을 피한 뒤 돌아와 보니 남편은 이미 죽었고 자신은 새로운 부농이라는 낙인이 찍혀있었다. 문화혁명의 바람이 불어닥쳐 이국형이 득세하자 오금과 극우로 몰린 진서전에게 이른 아침 거리의 돌담을 청소하는 일이 주어진다. 두 사람은 죄인으로 일을 하는 가운데 서로를 깊이 이해하고 마침내 동거까지 하게 돼 오금은 아이를 임신하게 된다. 그러나 각각 3년과 10년의 징역을 선고받아 서로 헤어지고, 오금은 혼자 아이를 낳게 된다. 미곡 관리소 주인 고연산이 오금을 도와주어 아이 이름도 자신의 성을 따게 해준다. 세월이 흘러 1979년 마침내 문화혁명은 종결되고 3년의 세월이 흐른 뒤 1982년이 된다. 헤어져 있던 사람들은 다시 만나고 명예회복된 진서전은 부용진으로 돌아와 오금을 부둥켜 안고 회한의 눈물을 흘린다. 그리고 그는 벼슬을 멀리하고 부용진에서 오금과 조용히 살기를 원한다.

As Chinese Communist Party secretary, Guo Yongchang was the most powerful man in his county, located in the rural inland province of Henan. Guo invited acclaimed documentary filmmaker Zhou Hao to record his final months in office. Through Zhou’s lens, we see Guo work tirelessly to achieve his greatest desire: for Henan to match the affluence of booming coastal areas. Zhou also captures the sordid details of local-level politics in pursuit of growth: lavish parties with foreign investors, threats to local workers protesting unpaid wages, and offers of bribes and kickbacks.
