영화는 여주인공 크리스가 애벌레를 먹고 최면에 빠지면서 시작된다. 애벌레가 들어간 이후부터 자신을 통제할 수 없게 된 크리스는 같은 상황을 겪고 있는 제프를 만난다. 서로에게 호감을 품게 된 크리스와 제프 사이에 돼지 사육사 샘플러가 끼어들면서 이야기는 예측불허의 상황으로 전개된다. 인물과 사건이 복잡하게 얽히는 난해한 서사구조 때문에 심층의 의미를 파악하기란 쉽지 않다. 몸으로 들어간 애벌레 때문에 재산을 잃고, 피해자들을 통제하는 보이지 않는 손이 있다는 설정은 SF적 상상력으로도 쉽게 수긍이 되지 않는다. 연출뿐 아니라 제프 역을 연기한 카루스는 누군가에 의해 조종되는 삶을 살아가는 최면의 시대, 자율성을 잃고 살아가는 인간의 초상을 장르 관습 안에 녹여내고 있다. 대사는 극도로 자제되고, 이미지의 리듬과 조형을 통해 서사의 흐름이 주재되고 있다.

1959년, 외계인들과의 싸움으로 우주 실험 괴물이 지구에 불시착 한다. 마치 바퀴벌레처럼 까맣고 납작하게 생긴 이 벌레 괴물은 대학생 쟈니의 입 속으로 들어가고 이후 냉동된 채, 실험실에 보관된다. 그로부터 27년 후인 1986년, 크리스는 대학 신입생 환영회때 본 매혹적인 신시아에게 접근하기 위해 베타 클럽에 들기로 한다. 이를 위해 입회 담력 실험으로, 시체를 가져다 다른 클럽 앞에 갖다 놓기로 한다. 하지만 단짝 친구인 JC와 함께 간 곳은 쟈니가 냉동되어있는 실험실. 쟈니가 실험관 밖으로 나오게 되고 그는 혼자 걸어서 대학 기숙사 앞에서 쓰러진다. 그의 갈라진 머리 틈새에서 튀어나온 우주 생물의 기하급수적인 번식력에 사람들은 공포에 떤다. 이 생물이 입 등을 통해 학생들의 몸 속으로 들어간다. 이렇게 괴물이 몸 속으로 들어가면 뇌 속에서 알을 부화시키는 동안만 좀비(시체가 살아다니는 것)가 된다. 이 사건 담당자인 카메론 형사 반장은 27년 전의 사건도 경험했던 인물로, 그를 중심으로 좀비 처치 작전이 시작된다. 신시아가 좀비의 위험에 처하기도 하여, 카메론 형사와 크리스는 화염 방사기를 동원하여 벌레들과 사투를 벌인다. 마침내 카메론 형사는 기숙사 지하실에 모여 있는 우주 생물의 본거지를 자신과 함께 자폭시킨다. 그러나 크리스와 뜨거운 포옹을 끝낸 후 신시아가 쓰다듬은 개의 입에서 크리프스가 튀어나온다.

1954년, 고지라는 옥시전 디스트로이어로 산화되었다. 그러나 계속되는 핵실험으로 어느날 도시에 나타난 쇼키리스라는 바닷니가 나타나는데 쇼키리스가 갑자기 출몰하던 건 고지라가 나타났기 때문이다. 하지만 일본 정부는 고지라의 부활은 아직 인정할 수 없다며 진실을 은폐하는 행위를 하지만 얼마 뒤 고지라가 도로를 부수며 부활하며 결국 일본 정부는 고지라의 부활을 공식적으로 인정한다. 30년만에 돌아온 파괴신 고지라는 건물을 부수고 다리를 부수는 등 각종 악행을 저지른다, 결국 정부는 고지라에 대비해 제작한 신무기, 슈퍼 X를 출동시켜 고지라의 활동을 어느 정도 정지시키고, 방위군은 고지라를 화산으로 유도하여 화산을 폭발시키려는 작전을 세운다. 그러나 러시아는 고지라를 죽이기 위해 도쿄 본토에 핵폭탄을 떨어뜨리려 한다. 결국 러시아의 무모한 작전으로 고지라는 다시 회복되고 원자력 발전소를 부수어 에너지를 충전시킨다. 방위군은 다시 슈퍼 X를 출동시켜 고지라를 멈추려 하지만 고지라의 열선으로 정리된다. 이후 방위군은 고지라를 화산으로 유도시켜 화산을 폭발시켜 고지라를 화산에 묻어버린다.

미국의 L. A 지역. 지금까지 선량한 시민이던 데브리즈(Jack Devries: 크리스 뭘키 분)라는 사람이 갑자기 살인마로 변해서 총기를 난사하는 사건이 발생하자, L. A 경찰 강력계의 톰 백 반장(Tom Beck: 마이클 누리 분)은 에드 서장(크루 굴레이거 분)의 지휘를 받아, 체포에 여념이 없다. 마침내 데브리즈를 발견, 사살한다. 그 무렵 FBI에서 로이드(Lloyd Gallagher: 카일 맥라클란 분)라는 자가 파견되어 지원을 요청하는데, 때마침 밀러(Jonathan Miller: 윌리암 보예트 분)라는 살인 난동자가 나타났기 때문이다. 밀러 역시 이번 사건 이전에는 선량한 사람이었다. 그 역시 사살되지만 경찰의 총격을 수십 발 맞고도 끄떡없이 버티다가 쓰러진다는게 이해가 되지 않는다. 밀러가 죽자 이번에는 유홍업소의 쇼걸인 브렌다(Brenda Lee Van Buren: 클로디아 크리스찬 분)가 똑같이 난동이다. 역시 총을 수 없이 맞고 끝까지 버티다가 죽는다. 이상함을 느낀 톰 벡은 로이드에게 숨김없이 다 털어놓으라고 하지만 로이드는 답변을 회피한다. 그를 조사하던 톰 벡은 그가 FBI요원이 아니고 죽은 FBI요원 로이드 갤러거의 신분을 도용하고 있음을 알게 되는데, 그의 설명에 따르면 데브리즈, 빌러, 쇼걸 등은 겉으로는 사람이지만 이미 사람이 아니고 그 몸 안에는 외계인이 들어가 있었다는 것, 인체 안에 자리잡은 외계인은 조종하던 인간의 육체가 쓰지 못하게 되면 즉시 거기서 나와서 옆에 있는 아무 사람이나, 그 몸 속에 들어가 다시 그 인간을 조종, 광기의 난동을 부린다는 것이다. 로이드는 그 외계인에게 친구와 아내, 딸까지 잃고 복수하려고 이곳까지 찾아온 외계인이었다. 쇼걸이 죽은 다음, 그 외계의 괴물은 매스터슨 과장(Lt.John Masterson: 클로렌스 펠더 분)의 애견의 몸속에 들어간다.

The assistant is a Jack the Ripper style killer who has done a few nasty murders which have riled the townsfolk. The body-snatched bodies become radioactive and start killing flowers and other stuff (but don't die themselves) and some stuff happens and in the end Karloff destroys the beam weapon equipment (and his lab and house), then the aliens leave and warn us that if anyone ever does it again there will be trouble.
