미야자키 하야오 감독이 스스로 만들고 내레이션까지 한 작품입니다. 작품 속에서 미야자키 하야오는 의인화된 돼지의 모습으로 나와 비행 기계들에 대해 설명을 합니다. 19세기 서양인이 상상하던 미래의 비행 기계가 유머러스하게 소개되며, 그 비행 기계들이 문명의 발전과 함께 발전해나가는 모습을 풍부한 상상력을 통해 그려놓았습니다. 이 작품에 등장하는 비행기계들의 묘사를 위해 사용된 기법은 "하울의 움직이는 성"에도 활용되었다고 합니다.

퀘이 형제 초기 작품으로 얀 슈반크마예르를 본뜬 인형(퍼핏)이 여러 주제에 대해 가르치는 구성을 갖고 있다. 펼쳐진 책을 머리에 쓴 슈반크마예르와 달리 강의를 듣는 인형(퍼핏)의 머리는 텅 빈 상태인데, 강의가 진행될 때마다 유사한 주제의 책으로 머리의 빈 공간이 채워지는 걸 볼 수 있다. 아홉 번의 강의마다 슈반크마예르 영화의 중요성이 다양하게 드러나며, 여러 영화적 기술이 특이하게 조합된 것이 특징이다.

실험주의 록 밴드 ‘히즈 네임 이즈 얼라이브 His Name Is Alive’의 음악을 사운드트랙으로 하는 3분짜리 안무 애니메이션. 봉제 인형, 흰 토끼, 종잡을 수 없이 움직이는 탁구공의 어울리지 않는 조합을 보고 있으면 최면에 빠진 듯한 묘한 매력이 느껴지면서, 동시에 어떤 사건이 일어날 것만 같은 조마조마한 기분이 들기도 한다. 마치 막스 에른스트가 만든 뮤직비디오를 보는 듯하다. 이 섬세한 흑백 영상은 러닝타임이 짧지만 퀘이 형제의 걸작으로 평가받는다.

아방가르드 작곡가 칼하인츠 슈톡하우젠이 영화 사운드트랙을 담당했다. 흑백에 컬러가 부분적으로 구현된 영화는 시네마스코프용으로 제작되었다. 실사와 애니메이션을 결합하고, 빛을 활용해 방 안에서 홀로 편지를 쓰는 한 여인의 내면을 형상화한다. 연필심은 자꾸 부러지고 여인은 계속해서 편지를 쓰는데, 여인의 감정에 따라 창문 밖에 보이는 빛의 풍경이 변화한다. 이 영화는 정신병원에서 줄곧 남편에게 편지를 썼던 엠마 호크에게 헌정하는 것이다. BBC와 파이프라인 필름스의 단편 음악영화 시리즈 ‘사운드 온 필름 인터내셔널 Sound on Film International’의 일환으로 코닝크스튜디오의 키스 그리피스가 제작했다.

A young female babysitter is chatting to her friend when the young girl she's watching disturbs her. She hangs up the phone and goes upstairs to investigate. She finds her screaming and standing up on her bed but can't find anything wrong. She calms the child down and goes back down stairs. This happens several times but things get more ominous and creepy as the babysitter has to investigate the supposedly safe little bedroom.

She soon becomes their housemaid and they soon begin to seek her favors. Alas, she falls for a young student she has met in the neighborhood, much to the two friends' dismay.

어두침침한 방 안에 남자와 여자가 있다. 방 밖으로 희고 밝은 해부실이 줄지어 있고 그곳에서는 인간을 대상으로 한 해부가 은밀히 진행 중이다. 아무래도 남자와 여자는 다음 해부 대상인 듯하다. 로코코 화가 장 오노레 프라고나르의 회화에서 영감을 받은 이 퍼핏 애니메이션은 내러티브는 존재하지만 그 주제나 의미는 쉽게 파악되지 않는다. ‘개인이 시스템 내에서 어떤 영향력을 미칠 수 있는가’와 같은 주제를 암시하는 작품이다.

In collaboration with Lomo, an Austrian camera company, and Mubi, a global film website, Weerasethakul was invited to make a work to launch the new LomoKino, a portable motion picture camera.
