홀리 구링(Holly Gooding : 드류 베리모어 분)은 막 성년이 된 어여쁜 처녀로 아버지로부터 엄청난 재산을 물려받은 상속녀. 그러나 일찍 어머니를 여윈 그녀는, 동생 프레드와 함께 정서 불안 상태로, 무서운 영혼 쌍둥이 때문에 악몽에 시달리는 불쌍한 소녀다. 그녀를 치료하는 정신과의사 헬러 박사(Doctor Heller : 데니스 크리스토퍼 분)는 홀리를 성적으로 착취하면서 그녀와 결혼하려 한다. 한편, 그리고 자신이 연루된 어떤 사건 때문에 아버지(Holly's Father : 토마스 보삭 분)가 남동생 프레드에 의해 창 밖으로 밀쳐 죽게 되고, 프레드는 실어증에 걸려 정신병원에 입원한다. 남편의 죽음으로 유산 상속의 위기감을 느낀 홀리의 계모는 딸을 살해하기로 마음먹는다. 그러나 어느 비오는 날, 홀리와 똑같이 생긴 여자가 엄마의 아파트를 방문, 칼로 살해한다. 몇 달 후 홀리는 어렸을 때 아버지, 남동생과 함께 살던 집이 있는 LA로 온다. 홀리는 신문에 난 룸메이트 모집 광고를 보고 가난하고 젊은 무명작가 패트릭 하이스미스(Patrick Highsmith : 죠지 뉴번 분)를 찾아가 같이 살기로 한다. 하나뿐인 방을 홀리에게 양보하고 거실 소파에서 자던 패트릭은 악몽에 시달리는 듯한 홀리의 잠꼬대에 잠을 설친다. 다음날 아침, 카페에서 작가인 여자친구 엘리자베스(Elizabeth : 레슬리 홉 분)를 만나 아침을 먹던 패트릭은 길건너에 카페를 응시하는 홀리의 음산한 모습을 보고 놀라는데...
