Crumb director Terry Zwigoff’s first film is a true treat: a documentary about the obscure country-blues musician and idiosyncratic visual artist Howard “Louie Bluie” Armstrong, member of the last known black string band in America. As beguiling a raconteur as he is a performer, Louie makes for a wildly entertaining movie subject, and Zwigoff honors him with an unsentimental but endlessly affectionate tribute. Full of infectious music and comedy, Louie Bluie is a humane evocation of the kind of pop-cultural marginalia that Zwigoff would continue to excavate in the coming years.

But when he succeeds, he is alarmed by the uncle's willingness to cave in to society in order to save the relationship.

The film is a parody of Disney's Fantasia, though possibly more of a challenge to Fantasia than parody status would imply. In the context of this film, "Allegro non Troppo" means Not So Fast!, an interjection meaning "slow down" or "think before you act" and refers to the film's pessimistic view of Western progress (as opposed to the optimism of Disney's original).

수에 천재적인 감각을 갖고 태어난 도널드(조쉬 하트넷), 자폐증의 일종인 말을 곧이 곧 대로 받아들이는 아스퍼거 증후군을 갖고 있다. 지저분하고 덤벙대는 도널드는 자폐증 지역 모임을 이끌어 나간다. 그는 언제나 숫자에 사로잡혀 머릿속에 떠오르면 스스로를 주체하지 못하고 걸핏하면 일상을 엉망으로 만든다. 로널드가 이끄는 자폐증 지역 모임의 사람들은 그들의 관심 밖의 일들에 대해 생각하는 것을 잘 하지 못한다. 그룹에 이사벨 소렌슨(라다 미첼)이란 이름을 갖은 새로운 멤버가 찾아온다. 도널드와 같은 아스퍼거 증후군을 갖고 있으며, 미술과 음악에 뛰어난 소질을 갖고 있으며 묘한 매력까지 있다. 도널드와 이사벨은 서로에게 깊은 사랑을 느낀다. 도널드는 정상적인 사람들 가운데 사회생활을 하고 자신감을 찾으면서 이사벨이나 자신이 본래 지니고 있는 비정상적인 부분을 거부하려 한다. 서로의 모습을 더 잘 이해할 것이라고 믿었던 이사벨은 이에 크게 실망하고 도널드를 떠난다. 둘은 다시 만나지만 이사벨은 여전히 도널드가 자신의 비 정상적인 부분을 받아들이지 못한다고 믿는다. 자신들이 속하지 못한 평범한 세상에 대한 분노로 이사벨은 위험한 선택을 하고 마는데…….

미국에서 학술회의에 참석하고자 영국 땅을 밟은 홀든은 초자연적인 것의 존재를 믿지 않는 차가운 이성의 소유자이다. 하지만 그는 마술사 캐스웰과 만나면서 자신에게 알 수 없는 저주가 드리워졌다는 사실을 차츰 깨닫기 시작한다. 믿음과 회의주의, 판타지와 리얼리티 사이의 대립과 대화를 영화적으로 풀어낸 은 투르뇌르의 영화답게 여전히 분위기가 만드는 공포로 깊은 인상을 준다. 그런데 재미있는 것은 여기에서는 다른 투르뇌르 영화와는 달리 악마의 존재를 실제로 보여주는 장면이 나온다는 것이다. 제작사쪽의 압력에 따라 어쩔 수 없이 삽입된 그 장면은, 만약 그것이 없었더라면 믿음과 모호함이란 주제에 좀더 어울리는 영화가 나오지 않았을까, 라는 생각을 하게 만든다. 하지만 은 그런 아쉬움에도 불구하고 흥미롭게 볼 수 있는 투르뇌르의 후기작이다. 영국에서 만든 이 영화는 비슷한 시기에 나온 해머 영화와 비교하면 투르뇌르의 특징을 더 잘 볼 수 있게 해준다.

포크 음악의 대부이자 전설로 남아 있는 어빙 스타인블룸이 죽자 그의 사랑하는 아들 조나단은 아버지를 추모하는 대규모의 포크 콘서트를 준비하게 된다. 조나단은 이 콘서트를 위해 어빙 스타인블룸이 가족처럼 아꼈던 포크 뮤지션들을 한자리에 모을 계획을 세운다. 한 때 이름을 날렸던 포크 싱어인 메인 스트리트 싱어즈와 뉴 메인 스트리트 싱어즈, 포크맨, 미치와 미키 등의 출연으로 기획되어진 어빙 스타인블룸의 콘서트는 그러나 미치의 출연 여부의 불투명으로 새로운 국면을 맞이하게 된다.
