유난히 겁 많고 언제 어디서나 두려움과 불안 속에서 살아가고 있는 청년이 있다. 외출도 자제하고 게임을 즐기며 자신만의 세상에서 살고 있던 그는 좀비로부터 자신을 보호하는 여러 규칙을 만들고 준수해온 덕분에 생존할 수 있었다고 말한다. 부모님이 살고 있는 동부 콜럼버스로 향하는 그는 무기로 무장하고 좀비라면 무작정 쏴 죽이는 한 남자를 만나고 서로 동부 쪽으로 향해 가고 있음을 알게 된 두 사람은 동행하게 된다. 청년은 이름을 말하려고 그는 서로 이름을 부르면 너무 친해진다며 자신들이 향하는 곳을 이름 삼아 부르기로 한다. 콜럼버스로 향하는 대학생과 탈라하시로 향하는 터프가이. 그렇게 소년은 콜럼버스가, 남자는 탈라하시가 된다. 트윙키라는 과자에 집착하는 탈라하시는 콜럼버스와 마트에 들렀다가 도움이 필요해 보이는 소녀를 만나게 된다. 소녀는 자신의 여동생이 좀비에게 물렸고 동생의 부탁으로 좀비가 되기 전에 죽이려고 한다며 총을 빌려달라고 한다. 그러나 자매는 갑자기 태도가 돌변해 무기와 차를 빼앗아 달아난다. 억세게 운 좋은 둘은 다시 새로운 차와 무기를 마련해 목적지로 향하는데 다시 그 자매를 만난다. 우연히 한 차를 타고 가면서 적대관계에서 살아남으려는 동료애 같은 분위기로 변하는데....

1987년에 ‘마이클 고닉’ 감독이 만든 옴니버스 호러 영화. 1982년에 ‘조지 로메로’ 감독이 ‘스티븐 킹’ 원작 단편을 영화로 만든 ‘크립쇼’의 후속작이다. 이번 작도 역시 스티븐 킹의 단편을 원작으로 삼았고, 조지 로메로가 각본, 톰 사비니가 특수효과를 맡았다. 내용은 한 작은 마을에서 어린 소년 ‘빌리’가 배달 트럭을 기다리다가 ‘크립쇼’ 최신호를 받아 읽어보면서 시작되는 이야기다. 전작은 5가지 단편으로 구성되어 있었는데, 본작은 3가지 단편으로 줄었다. 대신 오프닝 때 나온 꼬마 빌리 이야기가 3가지 단편이 끝날 때마다 막간극으로 들어가 독립적인 단편이 되어 사실상 4가지 단편이라고 할 수 있다. 메인 3가지 단편은 ‘올드 치프 우든 헤드(늙은 추장 우든 헤드)’, ‘래프트(뗏목)’, ‘히치하이커’다.

의사 로렌은 뉴욕의 몰락 이후 LA로 이동하여 생존자를 구출하고 아울러 자신의 가족들도 구하려고 한다. 그녀는 구조팀이 되어 다른 생존자를 구하려 출동한 워드 박사 일행을 구출하기 위해 출동한다. ​로렌과 구조 인원들은 보호복을 착용하고 카메라를 장착하지만 생존자들을 구출하기 위한 무모하리만큼 어려운 도전에 직면하게 된다. 무차별적인 감염자들의 공격으로부터 워드 박사팀을 구출하는 것은 목숨을 건 도전이었다. 감염자들의 공격이 있은 후 로렌은 일반적인 의사와는 다른 행동을 보이게 되고 사실은 자신은 의사가 아니고 주운 신분증으로 로렌의 흉내를 내며 LA에 있는 가족을 살리기 위해 어쩔 수 없는 선택이었음을 고백하고 용서를 구한다. 불의의 사망자가 나오고 구조팀은 어쩔 수 없이 로렌의 가족을 구하기 위해 그녀의 집으로 가게 되지만 이미 감염이 진행중인 딸아이를 발견하게 된다. 과연 그토록 구하고자 했던 자식이 좀비로 변해가는 상황을 과연 그녀는 어떻게 극복할 수 있을런지…
