서기 2691년, 악당 노몰로스는 장차 인류의 미래를 구하게 될 빌과 테드를 처치하기 위해 가짜 빌과 테드 로보트를 만들어 1991년으로 보낸다. 한편, 1991년의 진짜 빌과 테드는 상금 2만천달러를 얻기 위해 배틀 오브 어밴드 콘테스트에 참가할 준비를 하고 있다. 드디어 가짜 빌과 테드 로보트가 캘리포니아에 도착, 빌과 테드의 생활을 모두 망쳐놓고 죽음으로 몰아넣는다. 저승에 떨어진 빌과 테드는 지옥을 구경하다가, 저승사자 그림 리케르와 리페르와의 내기에서 이겨 우주 최고의 과학자와 함께 돌아와 착한 로버트를 만든다. 그리고 콘테스트 장소에서 가짜들과 미래에서 날아온 노몰로스를 상대로 싸워 승리하는데...

프랑스 니스에 자리한 라 빅토린느 스튜디오에서는 영화감독 페랑(프랑수아 트뤼포 자신)이 '파멜라를 찾아서'를 촬영중이다. 시아버지와 아들의 약혼녀가 그만 불륜의 사랑에 빠지자 아들이 아버지를 눈오는 저녁에 총으로 쏴 죽인다는 내용의 비극이다. 배우들과 스태프들이 모여들고, 할리우드에서 스타 쥴리(재클린 비셋 분)가 비행기를 타고 와 합류한다. 감독 페랑은 한편의 영화를 만들기 위해 수단 방법을 가리지 않는다. 연민도 없고, 자비도 없다. 밤마다 영화관에 붙어있는 오슨 웰즈의 스틸 사진을 훔치는 꿈에 시달리며, 매일 전쟁터에 나서는 기분으로 현장에 나간다고 독백한다. 쥴리는 정신병을 앓는 도중 유부남을 가로챈 노이로제 환자이며, 상대역 주연인 알퐁스(장 피에르 레오 분)는 세상에 사랑밖에 없으며 여자는 신비한 존재라고 떠벌리고 다니다가 실연당한다. 시아버지 역의 알렉상드르(장 피에르 오몽 분)은 영화에서 은퇴할 생각을 하다가 교통사고로 죽고, 시어머니 역의 세브린느(발렌티나 코르테스 분)는 왕년의 인기에 연연하며 알코올중독에 빠져 있다. 페랑 감독은 촬영일수를 단축해가며 악전고투 끝에 영화를 완성하고, 한여름을 함께 보낸 이들은 서로 다른 영화를 찍기 위해 뿔뿔이 흩어진다.

베트남 전쟁을 배경으로 극한에 처한 인간의 광기와 전쟁의 공포를 그린 프랜시스 포드 코폴라의 1979년작 의 제작 과정에 대한 다큐멘터리. 작가이기도 한 코폴라의 부인 엘레노어 코폴라가 연출에 참여했으며, 제목은 에 영감을 주었던 영국 현대 문학의 대표작 『어둠의 심연』(1899, 조지프 콘래드)에서 가져왔다. 기상 악화, 배우들의 컨디션 난조 등의 이유로 촬영은 계속 지연되어 제작비가 눈덩이처럼 불어나자 코폴라 감독의 경력은 물론 그의 삶까지 위태로워진다. 출연 배우들과 제작진의 생생한 증언까지 들을 수 있다.
