제2차 세계대전이 치열했던 와중, 으로 네오리얼리즘의 계기를 만들었던 비스콘티 감독이 대전 전의 독일을 무대로 나치즘에 의해서 부와 권력을 박탈당해 가는 철강실업가 일가족의 비극을 묘사하면서 역사 그 자체까지 파헤친 집대성이라고도 할 수 있는 작품. 장검의 밤이라는 암호명으로 히틀러에 의해 자행된 SA 대원 학살 사건이 역사적 배경이다. 나치가 대두해 온 33년의 겨울, 루루 지방에서 세력을 가진 철강 왕, 에센벡 가의 모임의 밤, 당사자가 누군가의 음모에 의해서 암살당한다. 이 사건을 계기로 발생하는 일가족의 골육상쟁의 싸움과 그것으로 인해 어부지리를 얻으려고 하는 음험한 나치 친위대의 존재를 묘사해낸다.

원하기만 한다면 무엇이든지 이룰 수 있을 것같은 줄리안과 클레이 그리고 둘 사이에 낀 아름다운 블레어는 고교졸업식날 기념 촬영을 하며 자신들의 장미빛 인생애 들떠있다. 그러나 부유한 가정 환경만 있을 뿐 삶의 목표가 없는 그들은 자유와 방황 사이를 오가며 흔들리기 시작한다. 이에 민감한 줄리안은 자신의 인생을 마약에 의존하고 도시의 희생양으로 전락한다.

1940년 11월 2차 대전 중, 영국에는 밤마다 나치의 약탈과 파괴가 잇달았지만 일부 영국 상류 사회인들은 전쟁을 피해 아프리카의 식민지 케냐에서 비교적 즐거운 생활을 즐기고 있었다. 주인공 델브스 브로튼은 선대로부터 많은 유산을 물려받은 노신사, 그에게는 젊고 아름다운 부인 다이애너가 있다. 막대한 재력으로 부인의 환심을 사며 결혼 생활을 유지하고 있는 델브스에게 큰 시련이 닥치게 된다. 다름아닌 다이내너가 그의 오랜 친구인 젊은 조스 애틀과 사랑에 빠진 것이다. 델브스 브로튼은 조스 애틀을 설득해 관계를 청한 할 것을 요구하지만 조스는 이를 거절하며 다이애너와 결혼하려 한다. 그러자 브로튼은 아내에게 헤어져준다며 그럴듯한 자축파티를 열고 그날밤 조스를 살해한다. 브로튼은 살인용의자로 나이로비에서 재판이 열리고, 재판 과정에서 조스 에틀의 애정 관계가 만인에게 공개돼 다이애너는 심리적 갈등을 겪고, 우여곡절 끝에 브로튼은 무죄 석방된다. 그러나 다이애너는 조스 에틀의 친구 길버트 콜빌의 도움으로 조스의 살해범이 브로튼임을 알아내고 그를 떠나려 한다. 이에 절망에 빠진 델브스는 총으로 다이애너를 위협하다가 스스로 자살하고 만다. 다음해 다이애나는 길버트 콜빌과 결혼했다는 자막을 끝으로 영화는 끝난다.
