락 밴드 단원인 듀이 핀 (잭 블랙 분)은 로커 답지 않게 뚱뚱하고 촌스러운 외모 때문에 밴드에서 쫒겨 난다. 월세까지 밀리자, 그는 급한 김에 친구 네드의 이름을 사칭하고, 호레이스 그린 초등학교의 대리교사로 취직한다. 수업 첫날부터, 공부를 가르칠 생각은 않고 시간 때울 궁리만 하던 듀이는 기발하고 엉뚱한 생각을 하게 되는데 앞으로 열릴 락 밴드 경연대회에 자기가 가르치는 학생들과 함께 참석하려는 것! 클래식기타와 피아노, 첼로, 심벌즈 등의 악기를 다뤄본 애들을 뽑아, 리드 기타, 베이스 기타, 키보드, 드럼을 가르치고, 다른 아이들에겐 백 보컬, 매니저, 코디, 장비 담당 등의 일을 맡긴다. 3주동안, 듀이와 아이들은 여자 교장 멀린스 (조안 쿠삭 분)의 눈을 피해 교실에서 락 음악을 연습하고, 드디어 오디션 접수까지 끝낸다. 마침내, 경연대회가 있던 날, 듀이가 가짜 선생임을 알게 된 학부모들은 멀린스 교장을 앞세우고 대회장으로 쳐들어 오는데.

1973년, 샌 디에이고 고등학교를 다니는 15세의 윌리암 밀러(패트릭 후지트 분)는 엄마 엘라인(프랜시스 맥도먼드 분)와 함께 살고 있다. 가출한 누나 아니타가 놓고 간 락 레코드를 들으며 자란 윌리암은 친구들과 어울리지 못하는 괴짜이며, 레드 제플린, 페이시스, 더 후, 험블 파이 등의 명 그룹들의 음악만이 유일한 벗이다. 학교 신문에 음악평을 기고했다가 우연한 기회에 록 매거진의 편집장인 록 비평의 선구자 레스터 뱅스(필립 세이모어 호프먼 분)와 친해진 윌리암은 최고 인기의 락그룹 블랙 사바스와 인터뷰할 수 있는 기회를 가지게 된다. 사바스의 공연무대 뒷편에서 \\\'스틸워터(Stillwater)\\\'를 만나 색다른 감동을 느낀 그는 허풍을 쳐서 롤링 스톤즈에서 요청한 스틸워터 그룹의 전국투어 기사를 쓸 수 있는 기회를 얻는다. 그렇게 윌리암은 어머니의 암묵적 허락하에 밴드의 투어에 합류한다. 투어 도중 윌리암은 밴드의 리드 기타리스트로 인기 급부상중인 러셀 하몬드(빌리 크루덥 분)와 친분을 쌓고, 스틸워터의 열광적인 팬인 페니 레인(케이트 허드슨 분)과 사랑에 빠진다. 하지만 러셀을 질투라는 리드 싱어 제프 베베(제이슨 리 분)와 러셀 사이에 팽팽한 긴장감과 사랑하는 페니가 유부남 러셀과 자신보다 더 가까운 관계라는 사실을 알게되는 등, 윌리암이 맞딱드린 것은 자신이 동경하던 이들의 진실과 마주하면서 겪는 고통과 좌절이었다.

1965년 전쟁이 한창이던 사이공에 공군 라디오 방송의 DJ로 한 사나이가 부임해 온다. 방송 첫날 DJ 애드리안 크로너(Adrian Cronauer: 로빈 윌리암스 분)은 정훈 장교로부터 갖가지 규제 사항을 지시받지만, 마이크를 잡자마자 그 모든 지시를 무시하고, 그만의 스타일로 방송을 진행한다. 이때부터 그의 프로는 최고의 인기인이 된다. 그러나 그의 파격적인 방송은 군상부층의 반발을 사게 되고, 이에 갖은 제재를 받게 되지만, 전쟁을 사랑할 수 없었던 애드리안은 따뜻한 인간에 대한 사랑과 평화의 집념으로 모든 압박을 이긴 채 끝없는 메세지를 전파해 나간다.
