1977년, 통일 이전의 베를린. 정신과 의사 클램페러를 찾아온 패트리샤는 무용 아카데미에 마녀들이 산다는 이야기를 늘어놓는다. 의사는 진료 노트에 자신이 만든 괴담을 사실로 믿고 있다며 패트리샤의 이야기를 망상이라 기록한다. 한편 블랑 선생의 지도를 받기 위해 미국에서 베를린으로 건너온 무용수 수지는 무용 아카데미에 입단해 블랑의 마음을 사로잡는다. 선생들은 수지를 패트리샤, 올가에 이어 마녀 마르코스에게 바칠 제물로 여기지만 블랑은 수지가 범상치 않은 존재라는 걸 직감한다. 수지 역시 블랑에게 춤을 배우며 잠재된 내면의 능력을 일깨운다.

자연 경관이 수려한 북부 캘리포니아 골짜기 시냇물에서 사금을 채취하는 사람들의 마을에 난데없이 말 탄 폭력배들이 들이닥쳐 행패를 부린 뒤 사라진다. 악덕 금광업자 러후드(Josh LaHood: 크리스 펜 분)가 채굴권을 소유한 영세 사금채취자들을 몰아내려고 한 짓이다. 헐 배럿(Hull Barret: 마이클 모라이어티 분)은 다른 사람들을 격려하며 러후드에게 저항하는데, 필요한 물건을 사러 마을로 내려간 헐은 러후드의 졸개들에게 잡혀 집단 폭행을 당한다. 그때 어디선가 나타난 남자(The Preacher: 클린트 이스트우드 분)가 러우드의 부하들을 때려눕힌다. 사람들은 그가 목사임을 알고 놀라는데, 모두 이 신비한 인물에게 존경심을 품게 된다. 그러던 중 헐이 꽤 큰 금덩이를 발견하고, 결국 러후드는 사금채취자 일인당 천 달러씩 준다며 모두 나가라면서 제안을 거절할 때에는 스탁번을 부르겠다며 협박한다.
