미국에서 학술회의에 참석하고자 영국 땅을 밟은 홀든은 초자연적인 것의 존재를 믿지 않는 차가운 이성의 소유자이다. 하지만 그는 마술사 캐스웰과 만나면서 자신에게 알 수 없는 저주가 드리워졌다는 사실을 차츰 깨닫기 시작한다. 믿음과 회의주의, 판타지와 리얼리티 사이의 대립과 대화를 영화적으로 풀어낸 은 투르뇌르의 영화답게 여전히 분위기가 만드는 공포로 깊은 인상을 준다. 그런데 재미있는 것은 여기에서는 다른 투르뇌르 영화와는 달리 악마의 존재를 실제로 보여주는 장면이 나온다는 것이다. 제작사쪽의 압력에 따라 어쩔 수 없이 삽입된 그 장면은, 만약 그것이 없었더라면 믿음과 모호함이란 주제에 좀더 어울리는 영화가 나오지 않았을까, 라는 생각을 하게 만든다. 하지만 은 그런 아쉬움에도 불구하고 흥미롭게 볼 수 있는 투르뇌르의 후기작이다. 영국에서 만든 이 영화는 비슷한 시기에 나온 해머 영화와 비교하면 투르뇌르의 특징을 더 잘 볼 수 있게 해준다.

카미노 공원의 한 놀이터에서 의문의 연쇄납치 사건과 살인 사건이 일어난다. 어린 아이들을 납치하여 자신의 연구에 필요한 실험 대상으로 써온 심리학자 닉스 박사. 그는 연구를 위해 자신의 아들 카터까지도 실험 대상으로 이용한다. 아들의 정신을 분열시켜 다중인격을 주입시키는데, 그중 한 인격은 예전에 박사가 실험 대상으로 연구했던 흉폭한 성격의 카인이었다. 그리하여 카터는 자신이 불리한 입장에 처하거나 범행을 저지를 때마다 자신이 아니라 다중인격 중의 하나인 카인이란 대리 인물로 변하여 행동한다. 한편 카터의 아내 제니는 우연히 옛연인과 재회하게 되고, 그들은 서로의 사랑을 확인하며 다시 사랑에 빠진다. 정사 중인 그들을 목격한 카터는 카인으로 변하여 공원에서 한 여인을 살해하고 아이를 납치한 후 모든 범행을 아내의 정부가 한 것처럼 위장하여 그를 체포되게 하고, 아내 제니마저 죽이기 위해 폭력을 하고 차에 실어 강물에 버린다. 아버지의 사주를 받아 아이들을 헌납해오던 카터는 급기야 자신의 딸 에이미마저 아버지에게 넘기는데...

Sixties couples Michael and Donna and Paul and Erica become involved with the intense Count Yorga at a Los Angeles séance, the Count having latterly been involved with Erica's just-dead mother.
