어린 나이에 교통사고로 부모를 여의고 고아가 된 남매, 새미(로라 리니)와 테리(마크 러팔로)는 아주 다른 삶을 살지만 서로 가깝게 지낸다. 어린 나이에 결혼과 이혼을 경험한 새미는 자신의 모든 정열을 8살 박이 아들에게 쏟는 과보호 어머니이다. 반면 테리는 말썽 많고 자유분방한 삶을 살아간다. 어느 날 테리가 돈을 빌리러 고향에 왔을 때 뜻밖의 사건을 당하고 그는 새미와 루디(로리 컬킨)와 잠시 동안 함께 살게 된다. 남매는 좋은 관계를 유지하려고 노력하고 선한 의도로 서로를 대한다. 하지만 새미와 테리의 인간적 유사점이 되려 서로에게 반감만 일으키고 마침내 그들은 따로 떨어져 살기로 하는데...

어머니(Mabel Chilton: 미리암 마고리스 분)를 살해한 혐의로 법정에 선 에드(Ed Chilton: 스티브 부세미 분)는 변호사를 고용해 법정 투쟁을 벌인다. 사실 그의 어머니는 죽은 지가 10년이 거의 다 되었다. 그러던 어느날 그가 경영하던 하드웨이 체인점에 한 세일즈 맨이 찾아와 자신은 '행복한 사람들협회'의 일하는 패롤이라며 '인생은 즐거우며 영원하다'고 뜬금없는 소리를 해댄다. 그리고는 죽은 어머니를 환생시켜 주겠다는 것이다. 평소 효성이 지극한 에드는 의아해 하면서도 비싼 돈을 주며 어머니를 환생시켜 달라고 한다. 다음날 죽었던 어머니가 깜쪽같이 살아나 그 뚱뚱한 몸을 이끌고 나타난다. 한편 함께 사는 나이든 삼촌 데니(Uncle Benny: 네드 비티 분)는 앞집에 살고 있는 젊은 아가씨 스톰(Storm Reynolds: 샘 젠킨스 분)을 몰래 훔쳐보며 마치 사진 작가인 것처럼 야단법석을 떤다. 그러나 스톰은 에드에게 관심을 갖고 자주 들락거리며 그를 유혹한다. 덩달아 그녀의 달콤한 몸짓에 넘어간 에드 역시 둥둥뜬 기분으로 그녀와 은밀하게 사랑을 나눈다. 그때마다 주책맞은 삼촌이 나타나 산통을 깨곤 하지만. 다시 살아돌아온 어머니는 예전의 어머니가 아니었다. 돈을 몽땅 떨어 음식을 장만하는가 하면 기겁을 해 도망가는 개를 포크와 나이프를 들고 쫓아 다니는 등. 그 뿐이 아니다. 그 뚱뚱한 몸으로 침대 위에서 괴상한 춤을 추기도 하고, 알지도 못하는 사람들을 초대해 친척이라며 요란한 파티를 연다. 보다 못한 에드와 데니는 극구 말려보지만 어머니는 속수무책. 급기야 에드는 조언을 얻으려 패롤을 찾아가는데...

The women are mainly disillusioned with life or estranged from husbands while the youngest has a crush on him.
