때로는 스토리라인이나 배우들의 대사가 그리 중요하지 않은 영화도 있다. 대신 음악이 주를 이룬다. 사람의 마음속 광풍을 표현하기에 말보다 음악이 나을 때가 많기 때문이다. 주인공 타린은 이유는 알 수 없지만 뭔가에 쫓겨 떠돌아다니는 신세다. 그녀는 결국 메릴랜드에 있는 이모 킴에게로 오게 되는데 킴은 남편 빌과 이혼을 생각 중이다. 그들의 딸 애비는 얼마 전 남자친구와 헤어져 괴롭기 짝이 없다. 타린도 타린이지만 그녀가 잠시 의탁하려는 이모 집 풍경은 온통 어둡고 우울한 이야기뿐이다. 원제 그대로 ‘나는 (늘) 우울해하곤 했다’는 것이다. 과연 이들이 안정을 되찾을 수 있을까? 또 다시 사랑을 회복할 수 있을까? 점점 파편화하고 고독해지는 현대인의 삶의 모습, 그 자화상을 음악과 함께 고즈넉한 시선으로 바라보게 하는 작품이다. 2013 선댄스 영화제 화제작. 이 작품은 정통적 내러티브 형식에 탄탄하게 바탕을 두었지만 감정의 표출이나 숨기는 방식은 놀랍고도 모험적으로 다루었다. 격한 감정과 큰 몸짓 그리고 음악이 가득하지만 현실의 환상을 가차없이 파괴해버리는 한편, 비전문 배우와 가공적이 아닌 환경에서 촬영함으로써 자연스러움을 추구했다. 별거와 이혼에 관한 솔직한 이야기를 만들려고 의도했다. 이러한 경험은 소중하고 와해되어가는 결혼 생활과 가족 관계가 얼마나 복잡하면서도 생명력이 있는지, 어떻게 시작되어 봉합되는 지, 그리고 당사자들 뿐만 아니라 같이 살고 있는 가족들에게 어떤 영향을 미치는 지를 그리려고 했다. 이 작품은 가장 개인적인 감정을 담은 이야기이자 가족에 관한 영화다. 와해가 이미 되었더라도 다시 가정으로 돌아갈 수 있다는 희망이 있고, 앞으로 새로운 가족을 만들 수 있다는 긍정적인 내용을 담았다.
