20세기 미술의 거장 피카소(Pablo Picasso: 안소니 홉킨스 분)는 어린 연인이 있었다. 촉망받는 신인 화가 프랑소와즈(Francoise Gilot: 나타샤 맥엘혼 분)는 1943년 파리에서 피카소를 만나 그와의 사랑을 꽃피운다. 60대에 접어든 피카소는 여전히 거칠고, 열정적인 젊음을 유지하고 있다. 프랑소와즈와의 관계를 지속하면서도 피카소는 자신의 어린 딸을 키우고 있는 화가 마리 테레즈(Marie-Therese: 수잔나 하커 분)를 주기적으로 방문한다. 피카소를 향한 불타는 열정으로 가득한 또 한명의 화가 도라(Dora Maar: 줄리안 무어 분)는 정신 분열에 가까운 증세를 보이며 그에게 집착한다. 피카소의 첫 번째 연인은 이제 갓 스물을 넘긴 아들 파블로를 키우고 있는 러시아 댄서 출신 올가(Olga Picasso: 제인 라포타이어 분)까지, 피카소는 여러명의 여성들 사이에서 사랑과 애증, 집착과 시기를 한몸에 받고 있다. 어린 프랑소와즈는 이런 피카소를 쉽게 이해할 수는 없지만, 그래도 순응하기로 결심한다. 예측할 수 없는 성격에 환상적인 유머, 구두쇠같은 성격, 아동학대를 일삼는 피카소이지만 프랑소와즈는 그의 모든 것을 그대로 받아들인다. 어느날, 피카소는 프랑소와즈를 당대 최고의 화가 마티스에게 소개시켜준다. 연인인 동시에 같은 일을 하고 있다는 연대감은 프랑소와즈의 예술활동을 살찌운다. 또, 그녀는 피카소의 아이들을 낳게되고, 점점 그와의 연결고리를 단단히 하기 위해 힘쓰지만, 피카소에게는 또다른 여인이 생기는데...

An imaginary insight into Pablo Picasso's creative mind and painted creatures and characters. We enter in his head and walk with him the intricate maze that was his imagination to find the creatures and stories that populated his psyche and came out when he painted a canvas. His imagination is presented as the myth of the maze and the Minotaur, and some of the characters in the piece are in Picasso's real paintings - his famous dove, the Minotaur, and the ladies of Avignon, among many others.

In this surrealist film director Picasso can awaken from the dead. He steals a paintings painted by himself of a couple of wealthy psychiatrists. When Picasso meets Takla Bash, a patient of the psychiatrists, Picasso falls in love. Although it is his own daughter, he remembers an incredible love affair, in which a film with a blue cow plays a role. In the majority of the paintings shown in the film are works of Herbert Achternbusch.

Biographer Sir John Richardson and Picasso’s granddaughter, Diana Widmaier Picasso, are the star witnesses in a documentary that reassesses the artist’s output in the years before his death in 1973. The story is of a creative spirit finding new impetus in response to both death’s approach and the censure of contemporaries and critics.
