Iago confides to his friend -- who had hoped to marry Desdemona -- that he serves Othello to further his own ends. Venice needs Othello to protect its commercial interests in Cyprus where the Turkish fleet is headed. Desdemona insists on going to Cyprus, too. In Cyprus, Iago plots to convince Othello that Desdemona has betrayed him with Cassio. A lot more than political ambition seems to be motivating Iago.

"애비를 속인 여자이니 틀림없이 남편도 속일 여자이니라!" 터키 제국이 선전포고의 포문을 연다. 오델로와 그의 군대는 키프로스에 있는 이탈리아의 요새에 급파된다. 물론 오델로는 터키 함대를 무릅쓴 후 승전보와 함께 키프로스에 돌아오고 그곳에서 기다리고 있던 데스데모나와 열정적인 신혼 초야를 보낸다. 그러나 온몸을 불사를듯이 열렬한 그들의 사랑은 순식간에 맺어진 사랑인 만큼 질투심에 불타는 이야고의 치밀한 음모와 간계로 인해 금이 가기 시작한다. 오델로 부부의 관계엔 서서히 파경의 독소가 퍼지기 시작한다.

Verdi’s monumental score is fully the equal of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy—and both demand great actors. This is one performance where both playwright and composer are well served. Plácido Domingo’s Otello is one of the glories of the operatic world, beautifully sung and so commandingly acted that audiences are devastated by the end. Renée Fleming’s ravishingly beautiful Desdemona is deeply moving, and as Iago, James Morris is as beguiling as he is menacing. Under James Levine’s conducting the Met orchestra and chorus are vital characters in the drama.
