Father (1990)

Slovakia, on the eve of the outbreak of World War II. The family of the young Jewish Martin Friedmann gathers to celebrate his bar mitzvah and make a solemn promise that they will all meet again a year later around the same table; but the storms of war and anti-Semitic fanaticism will lead each of them down very different paths.

A pharmacist is murdered, and a woman happens to see the culprit leave the scene. She soon finds herself being stalked by the killer.

16살 먹은 고등학생인 토드(Todd Bowden: 브래드 렌프로 분)는 역사 시간에 배운 유태인 대학살에 대해 궁금한 점이 너무 많다. 우등생인 그는 특유의 호기심으로 유태인 대학살에 대해 보다 더 심층적인 공부를 하기 위해 인터넷을 찾고 유태인 대학살에 대해 아주 자세히 알게 된다. 공부를 하면 할 수록 그의 호기심은 더해만 가고 그러던 중 그곳에서 본 사진 속의 나치 친위대원이 전에 버스에서 우연히 마주친 동네 할아버지 커트(Kurt Dussander: 이안 맥켈렌 분)라는 것을 알게 된다. 커트 할아버지는 나치라는 것을 속이고 미국으로 이민 와서 토드가 살고 있는 마을에서 조용히 살고 있었던 것이다. 경찰에 신고를 하면 모든 것이 끝이 날 상황. 하지만 유태인 대학살에 대해 많은 궁금증이 남아있는 토드는 커트 할아버지를 경찰에 신고하지 않는 대신 예전의 나치 친위대원으로서 참가한 유태인 대학살에 대해 알고 있는 모든 것을 말해 달라고 한다. 늙고 힘도 없으며 자신의 인생이 달린 치명적인 약점으로 말미암아 어떤 저항을 할 수 조차 없는 커트. 그는 이 위험한 제안을 어쩔 수 없이 받아들이고 자신의 과거에 대해 이야기하기 시작한다. 과거를 숨기고 조용히 살아왔던 그였지만 무엇엔가 홀려 엄청난 만행을 저질렀던 악몽과 같은 과거를 다시금 떠올리자 점차 자신 안에 잠재되어 있던 악령이 부활함을 느낀다. 토드와 커트는 무엇인가가 잘못 되어가고 있음을 느끼고 이런 둘의 만남을 그만 두려한다. 하지만 예기치 않은 인물의 등장으로 상황은 새로운 국면을 맞이하는데.

제 3 제국의 운명이 끝을 향해가고 있을 무렵, 타락한 이탈리아 귀족들 네 사람이 성욕을 마음껏 분출할 수 있는 천국을 만들기로 합의한다. 악명이 자자한 뚜쟁이 네 사람을 확보한 뒤 나치군인 몇 사람을 끌어 모은다. 이 타락한 귀족들은 이탈리아 10대 소년 소녀 백여 명을 강제로 데려와 "재미와 게임"을 위해 외딴 빌라에 가둬 놓는다. 권력자들은 매일 어떤 방식으로 성욕을 분출할지 회의하고 그 수위도 점점 높아지는데…

While escaping from Nazis during the WWII, a Jewish man dug suitcases full of things dear to his heart in the ground two. The war deprived him of his family, and afterwards he endlessly turns over the soil of Antwerp to find the suitcases, which makes him look obsessed. He keeps checking old maps and keeps digging, trying to find, in fact, those he lost. His daughter Chaya is a beautiful modern girl looking for a part-time job. She finds a place as a nanny in the strictly observant Chassidic family with many children, although her secular manners clearly fly in the face of many commandments. One of the reasons she is accepted is that mother of the family is absolutely overburdened by the household, so she stays despite the resistance of the father, normally - an indisputable authority in the family. She develops a special bond with the youngest of the boys, four-year old Simcha, so far incapable of speaking.

Through interviews we meet some of the people who risked their lives to hide Jewish children during World War II and how this experience has continued to affect the survivors.

Certain of the location where his father and younger brother were murdered, Greenberg returns to find most of his former neighbors predictably claiming foggy memories at first; but soon their recollections come more easily.

Henya is a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp, and has come out of the experience considerably worse for wear; she's haunted by the memories of her past, and has become emotionally unstable. Circumstances for her and her daughter are hardly improved by the poverty of the newly wounded state of Israel, and their own difficult economic circumstances. Aviya, meanwhile, is obsessed with finding her missing father, and wonders if he might be the man who has just moved into their village. Henya, however, knows better, and knows why Aviya's father is never coming back to them.

Filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev follows two Czech Holocaust survivors, Jan Weiner and Arnost Lustig, as they revisit Terezin, a labor camp where Arnost was interned for five years and Jan's mother was murdered.

Paula Tobias, a Holocaust survivor who has suffered the ultimate personal tragedy of losing her spouse and children during the Nazi occupation of World War II. Now re-married and living in America during the late 1960's with husband David, they build a new life together with sons Ben and Jake. One evening, Paula receives a phone call which assures her that her son, Alec, is actually alive and in New York. This brings up painful memories from the past for everyone involved, including Ben and Jake, who force their father to talk about the Holocaust. Paula rushes to New York only to find that it was a mistake - Alec was never found. She falls into a dramatic depression, as the family confronts their fears and tries to stay together.

In 1945 Irene, Ewa and Joe were among the nearly 30,000 survivors rescued from German concentration camps to the peaceful harbour town Malmö, Sweden. Here they started life again.

An elderly Israeli Jew of Greek origins was sent to Greece to represent his town in a town twinning ceremony, however he went instead to search for his friend from the childhood, who saved him from the Holocaust. In meantime he formed a special relationship with young Greek woman, and dealt with the broken relationship with his devout Hasidic son.

Tsili is a young girl caught in the middle of World War II. After her family is taken to a concentration camp, Tsili hides in the forest, free from hatred and men, until the arrival of Marek, a stranger who speaks to her in Yiddish.

In March 1943, twenty-year-old Ovadia Baruch was deported together with his family from Greece to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Upon arrival, his extended family was sent to the gas chambers. Ovadia struggled to survive until his liberation from the Mauthausen concentration camp in May 1945. While in Auschwitz, Ovadia met Aliza Tzarfati, a young Jewish woman from his hometown, and the two developed a loving relationship despite inhuman conditions. This film depicts their remarkable, touching story of love and survival in Auschwitz, a miraculous meeting after the Holocaust and the home they built together in Israel. This film is part of the "Witnesses and Education" project, a joint production of the International School for Holocaust Studies and the Multimedia Center of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
