A re-edited Italian-language dubbed version of Godzilla, using as a basis the U.S. version Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956), plus WWII newsreel footage and clips from other monster 1950's movies. The re-edited film was then colorized via a process called Spectrorama 70 consisting of applying various colored gels to the black and white footage. The film's opening and ending also features new music composed by musician Vince Tempera (under the pseudonym Magnetic System).

The U.N.G.C.C. (United Nations Godzilla Countermeasure Center) recovers the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah and construct Mechagodzilla as a countermeasure against Godzilla. Meanwhile, a giant egg is discovered along with a new monster called Rodan. The egg is soon found to be none other than an infant Godzillasaurus.

Originally released in Japan as "The Return of Godzilla" in 1984, this is the heavily re-edited, re-titled "Godzilla 1985". Adding in new footage of Raymond Burr, this 16th Godzilla film ignores all previous sequels and serves as a direct follow-up to the 1956 "Godzilla King of the Monsters", which also featured scenes with Burr edited into 1954's "Godzilla". This film restores the darker tone of the original, as we witness the nuclear destruction of giant lizard terrorizing Japan.

수백 만년전 지상에 있었다고 전해지는 레무리아 대륙의 후손들인 시토피아 인들은 현대 인류들 모르게 지구 지하에서 살아오고 있었다. 그러나 지상의 인류들이 핵실험을 거듭하자 지하가 흔들려 생존의 위협을 받게 되고, 이에 시토피아 인들은 괴수 메가로를 지상으로 올려보내 인류를 공격하게 한다. 제트쟈가(제트 재규어)라는 로봇을 개발한 이부키 고로 박사는 제트자카를 괴수섬으로 보내 고지라에게 메가로를 물리치는 것을 도와달라고 요청하게 한다. 괴수섬에서 먼저 돌아온 제트쟈가는 사실 제작자 고로 박사도 모르던 거대화 능력이 있었고(…) 거대화해서 메가로와 싸운다. 또 괴수섬으로부터 고지라가 와서 메가로를 협공한다. 이에 시토피아 인들은 우주에 있는 M성운인들부터 가이강을 빌려와서(…) 메가로의 증원으로 붙여준다. 싸움 끝에 메가로는 봉인당하고, 가이강은 다시 도망간다. 고지라는 제트쟈가와 작별인사한채 헤어지며 괴수섬으로 돌아간다.

괌 부근에서 미군의 원자력 잠수함이 실종되는 사고가 일어났다. 구조대는 그곳에서 고지라를 목격하지만, 방위군은 고지라에 대한 대비를 소홀히 하며 낙관적인 자세를 견지하고 있었고, 50년전의 고지라 상륙시 양친을 잃은 타치바나 준장은 그런 방위군의 모습에 우려를 느꼈다. 같은 무렵, 일본 각지에서 괴수에 의한 것으로 보이는 괴사건이 일어난다. 우연히 이 사건에 말려든 마이너 방송 디지털Q의 기자 타치바나 준장의 딸, 유리는, ‘야마토 3성수’라고 하는 수호 괴수의 존재를 알게 된다. 고지라의 접근을 감지한 바라곤이 가장 먼저 깨어난다. 곧이어 고지라도 일본에 상륙해 나아간다. 바라곤은 하코네에서 고지라와 사투를 벌이지만 고지라의 압도적인 힘 앞에 바라곤은 쓰러져 버리고, 유리는 나머지 2대 성수의 부활을 믿으며 타치바나 준장이 지휘하는 방위군과 고지라의 최후 결전장인 요코하마로 향하게 된다, 바라곤에 이어 깨어난 모스라와 기도라도 고지라를 쫓아 요코하마로 향한다.

오키나와의 아즈미 공주는 도시가 거대 괴수에 의해 멸망하는 끔찍한 환상을 목격한다. 한편, 동굴 탐험가인 시미즈 마사히코에 의해 알 수 없는 금속이 발견되고, 금속은 미야지마 교수에게 인계되어 조사된다. 한편 마사히코의 동생인 시미즈 케이스케가 이끄는 발굴단은 '검은 구름이 산 위에 나타나 세상을 멸망시킨다.'는 불길한 예언이 그려진 방과 벽화가 우연히 발견하고, 케이스케는 고고학자인 사이고 카네시로와 함께 예언서를 번역한 결과, 예언서의 내용과 동굴에서 발견된 조각상은 오키나와에 존재했던 전설의 괴물, 킹 시사와 관련되어 있던 것이 확인된다. 그때 갑자기 괴한이 카네시로의 집에 침입하여 킹 시사의 조각상을 탈취하려 하지만 시미즈 마사히코와 격투를 벌인 끝에 조각상 탈취를 실패하고 결국 도주한다. 머지않아 검은 구름이 산처럼 형성되고, 고지라가 후지산에 등장하면서 날뛰기 시작한다[스포일러]. 갑자기 안기라스가 등장하면서 고지라의 팔을 할퀴자, 고지라의 상처에서 금속이 살짝 드러난다. 그러자 고지라는 안기라스의 턱을 찢어서 안기라스를 제압하고, 싸움에서 진 안기라스는 결국 도망친다.

공해로 인해 일본 각지가 썩어가고 있던 1970년대, 우주에서 날아온 작은 생명체가 일본 연안의 공해물질과 융합해 성장하기 시작한다. 커져가던 생명체는 이윽고 사상 최악의 공해괴수 ‘헤도라’가 되어 각지를 유린한다. 헤도라가 지나가기만 해도 순식간에 백골이 되는 사람들. 모든 생명이 사라질 위기에 처하자 드디어 고지라가 일어선다. 하지만 헤도라의 능력은 고지라 마저 압도하는데…
