미이케 다카시 식 공포영화의 진수. 코스케는 일본의 고전‘ 요츠야 괴담’을 각색한 연극‘ 마코토 요츠야 괴담’에 캐스팅된다. 그가 맡은 역할은 이에몬, 그리고 그와 동거중인 여친 미유키 역시 주연 오이와 역을 맡는다. 하지만, 공연을 준비하면서 코스케는 나이 어린 여배우 리오와 가까워 지고, 미유키는 자해 소동을 벌이며 복수를 결심한다. 영화는 연극 속 이야기와 유사한 현실 속 이야기가 병행하며 전개된다. 연극 속 이에몬은 출세를 위해 아내를 함정에 빠트려 죽이고, 현실에서는 코스케와 리오의 관계를 눈치 챈 미유키가 복수를 한다. 는 공포영화이지만, 미이케 다카시 감독은 공포 그 자체보다는 연극과 현실 속 이야기를 어떻게 조화롭게 풀어나가는가에 더 관심을 기울이고 있다. 그리고, 공포감을 영화 곳곳에 산재시키기 보다는, 짧지만 강렬한 공포감을 영화 속에 심어두었다. 오이와와 미유키의 복수, 코스케와 이에몬의 비참한 최후 모두가 마지막까지 병행하며 전개되는 것이다.
