LA 경찰국의 거칠기로 소문난 강력계 형사 러셀 로간(Russell Logan: 루 다이아몬드 필립스 분)은 익명의 여자(실은 심령 술사인 테스 시튼)의 전화 제보를 받고, 벌써 15번째나 계속돼 오고 있는 '별표 연쇄 살인범'의 검거에 성공, 범인 패트릭 채닝(Patrick Channing: 제프 코버 분)을 가스실로 보낸다. 그러나, 이미 악마로부터 제1권능(부활 능력)을 부여받은 패트릭 채닝은 그 혼령이 부활하여 로간이 자기를 죽인데 대한 복수로, LA 경찰관의 몸에 들어가 집중적으로 형사들을 죽게 만든다. 로간은 그때마다 범인을 죽이지만 범인은 번번히 부활하여 재범을 계속한다. 로간은 제보자인 심령술사 테스 시튼(Tess Seaton: 트레이시 그리피스 분)을 처음엔 의심했었지만, 범인이 계속 부활하자, 테스의 주장을 받아들여, 어떤 종교적인 해결책을 구하러 악마의 세계에 정통한 수녀를 만나 협조 구하나 거절당한다. 그 다음엔, 뭔가 알아보기 위해 범인 패트릭 채닝의 생가를 테스와 함께 방문하여, 패트릭이 어려서 악마의 혼령에 홀렸었다는 사실, 그리고 그 은신처가 지하 수도관속임을 알고, 수녀를 설득하여 '성스런 칼'을 휴대하고 그 수도관으로 가서 사투끝에 악마의 혼에 씌운 패트릭을 성스런 칼로 찔러 영원히 죽게 만든다.
