The Mild West (1933)

노래와 춤으로 유명한 봅(Bob Wallace: 빙 크로스비 분)과 필(Phil Davis: 대니 케이 분)은 전쟁 후 한팀을 이루어 열띤 활동을 해오고 있었다. 어느 겨울, 그들의 애인의 베티(Betty Haynes: 로버메리 클루니 분), 쥬디(Judy Haynes: 베라 엘렌 분)과 함께 버몬트로 크리스마스 여행을 떠난다. 물론 그들은 애인들과 즐겁게 보낼 생각을 하고 있었으니 옛 군대 상사가 경영하는 여관이 재정적인 어려움을 겪고 있는 것을 보고 봅과 필은 그를 도울 모험을 시작한다.

코엔 형제의 독창적인 세계에서 탄생한 개척 시대 이야기가 펼쳐진다. 미국의 서부 개척 시대를 배경으로 펼쳐지는 연작 서부극. 한 편 한 편, 서로 다른 개성으로 빚은 여섯 편의 이야기 속에서, 코언 형제의 진가가 빛을 발한다.

가이 홀든은 뮤지컬 연출자이며 댄서이고 진저 로저스의 캐릭터 미미는 짜증나는 영국인 지질학자와 애정없는 결혼생활에 얽혀있는 미국인 유부녀이다. 가이는 친구인 변호사 에그버트와 런던을 방문했다가 항구에서 만난 미미에게 반하게 된다. 나중에 미미는 에그버트를 변호사로 고용하고 그는 미미에게 불륜의 현장을 연출하라고 제안한다. 미미는 그 연극을 위해 브라이튼으로 가는데, 에그버트와 함께 그곳에 도착한 가이를 그 연극의 상대자라고 믿어버린다. 나중엔 에그버트가 고용한 진짜 전문가인 이탈리아인 로돌포 토네티가 이들 사이에 끼어들게 되는데...

쇼맨 제리 트래버스는 프로듀서 호레이스 하드윅이 운영하는 런던의 공연장에서 근무하고 있다. 그날 공연 숙소에 데일 트레몬트라는 여인이 나타나고 제리는 그녀를 보고는 첫 눈에 반한다. 하지만 데일이 제리를 호레이스로 착각하는 일이 벌어진다. 데일에 대한 제리의 감정이 짝사랑이 되면서 영화는 소동극으로 변모한다

맨하탄 북반부, 하렘의 한복판에 카튼 클럽이 세계 제일급의 클럽이라는 명성을 누리면서 1923년에 문을 연다. 클럽 오디션에서 클럽의 운영자 더치를 도와준 딕시와 샌드맨은 쉽게 합격, 무대를 누빈다. 더치는 딕시와 친한 베라를 정부로 삼은 것 이외에는 딕시에게 잘해 준다. 그후, 딕시는 헐리우드에 진출, 스타가 되고 한편, 탭 댄스에 재질이 있는 샌드맨은 백인 여가수 릴라를 사랑하지만, 흑인이란 이유로 설움을 받는다. 하지만 결국에 재능을 인정받아 흑인은 절대불가라는 카튼 클럽의 전통을 깨고 무대에 서게 된다. 딕시의 동생 빈센트가 더치의 부하 프렌치를 납치, 돈을 갈취한 사건과 베라를 학대하는 것을 본 딕시는 더치와 정면으로 맞선다. 일대 접전을 벌인 후 딕시는 서부로 돌아가는데, 릴라도 마침내 그의 한결같은 사랑에 감동한다.

브로드웨이 최고의 쇼무대를 꾸미고 있는 몰리(Molly: 에델 머만 분)와 테렌스 도나휴(Terence Donahue: 댄 데일리 분) 부부는 세 자녀가 성장하자 그들과 함께 가족 쇼단을 꾸민다. 부모의 재능과 끼를 물려받은 스티브(Steve Donahue: 조니 레이 분), 케이트(Katy Donahue: 미치 게이너 분) 팀은 춤과 노래에서 발군의 실력을 보이고 ‘도나휴 쇼단’은 승승장구 빅히트를 기록한다. 그러던 어느날 맏아들 스티브가 신부가 되겠다는 폭탄 선언을 한다. 게다가 여자와 술을 지독히도 좋아하는 막내팀은 놀랄만한 미모의 가수 지망생 빅키(Vicky: 마를린 몬로 분)와 사랑에 빠져 불행을 자초한다. 캐이트, 빅키, 팀 세 사람이 함께하는 새로운 공연이 막을 올리는 날, 빅키에 대한 짝사랑에 상심해 있던 팀은 자동차와 함께 전복되는 사고를 당하는데...
