시놉시스

카메룬 청년 레오나르는 사하라 사막을 건너 유럽을 향하던 길에 강간 당한 나이지리아 출신의 호프를 만나 함께 데리고 간다. 유럽이 얼마 남지 않은 지점에는 아프리카 국가별로‘ 게토’들이 형성되어있고, 카메룬 게토에 들어간 둘은 그곳의 규칙에 따라 어쩔 수 없이 결혼한다. 레오나르는 호프의 매춘을 통해 불법 입국에 필요한 돈을 마련한다. 아프리카에서 유럽으로 향하는 불법이민의 흐름이 영화에서 다뤄진 것은 어제오늘이 아니다. 그럼에도 <호프>는 그 지난한 과정의 알려지지 않은 부분을 드러내기에 새롭다. 유럽을 목전에 둔 위치에 형성된 게토들의 존재와 그 속에서 자행되는 폭력과 범죄, 나름대로 작동하는 약육강식의 법칙을 마주하는 것은 충격적이다. 다큐멘터리 출신 감독답게 현실의 가려진 부분을 리얼리즘적으로 담아낸 것이 돋보이며, 긴장 속에 거의 소통이 없던 두 주인공 남녀 사이에 차츰 사랑의 감정이 싹트는 것을 섬세하게 잡아낸 것도 장점이다. 두 비전문배우의 날 것의 연기 또한 이 영화의 주목해야 할 지점이다. The documentary follows their lives and for some, their death. Filmmaker Remi Vaughan-Richards a 'student' of the era has been documenting Kunle and the Faaji Agba musicians since 2009 to keep their musical legacy alive and relevant.
