The Underdogs (1940)

페드로(Pedro: 마르코 레오나르디 분)와 리타(Tita: 루미 카바조스 분)는 서로 사랑하는 사이이다. 페드로 아버지는 리타 어머니에게 두 사람의 결혼을 청하나 거절당한다. 이유는 멕시코 명문가에서는 막내딸은 결혼은 못하고 어머니를 돌보도록 하는 풍습이 있는데 리타는 막내딸인 것이다. 리타 어머니는 리타보다 두살위인 언니 로사우라(Rosaura: 야렐리 아르즈멘디 분)와 결혼할 것을 제의한다. 페드로는 한집에서 같이 지낼 수 있다는 생각에 언니와의 결혼을 승락한다. 리타는 음식을 만들어 사람의 감정을 전달하는 신통력을 가지고 있다. 페드로와 언니 결혼식날, 케이크를 먹은 하객들은 불행한 결혼을 아는듯 눈물을 흘리고 토하게 된다. 그리고 페드로가 선물한 장미로 만든 장미꽃 소스를 통해 진정한 사랑의 마음을 전달하게 되고 큰 언니 헤루트루디(Gertrudis: 클라우뎃 마일레 분)는 열정을 못참고 집을 뛰쳐나가 혁명가의 아내가 된다. 로사우라의 난산으로 오게 된 브라운 박사(Doctor John Brown: 마리오 아반 마티네즈 분)는 리타를 보고 사랑을 느끼게 된다. 엘레나 부인(Mama Elena: 레지나 토르네 분)은 리타와 페드로 사이가 심상치 않음을 알고 페드로 부부를 삼촌집으로 보낸다. 로사우라의 아들이 전염병으로 죽었다는 소식을 들은 리타는 미치게 되어 브라운 박사 집에서 치료를 받게 된다. 둘은 사랑을 느끼게 되어 리타는 브라운 박사의 청혼을 받아들인다. 한편 엘레나 부인은 반란군이 침입해 저항하다 사망한다. 리타는 비로소 엄마의 비밀을 알게 되는데...

떠돌이 사내 호건(클린트 이스트우드)은 세 부랑자에게 겁탈당할 위기에 처한 여자를 구해준다. 그들을 모두 쏴 죽인 호건이 시신에서 총과 금품을 챙기는 사이 그 여자는 수녀옷을 입고 나타난다. 좀 전까지 반라의 여인이었던 그녀가 사실은 신앙심 깊은 수녀 사라(셜리 맥클레인)였던 것. 그때부터 두 사람은 함께 동행을 하며 그들을 쫓는 프랑스군을 합심해 따돌린다. 심지어 호건은 수녀인 사라에게 방울뱀의 꼬리를 들고 있게 하면서까지 프랑스군을 따돌리는 작전을 세운다. 오직 돈만 밝히는 호건은 멕시코 혁명군을 돕는 대가로 금괴를 받기로 한 상태고, 사라는 선량한 멕시코인들을 죽이며 식민지를 약탈하는 프랑스군을 증오해 혁명군을 돕고 있는 상태다. 목적은 다르지만 어쨌건 멕시코 혁명군을 위해 일하고 있는 것. 그렇게 프랑스 수색대에 쫓기는 가운데 두 사람은 밤마다 긴장한 상태로 야영을 하고 수시로 의견 충돌도 한다. 그러면서 둘은 묘한 우정을 쌓아간다.

1913년 멕시코. 범죄를 일삼는 8명의 악당들은 그들을 추적하는 인간 사냥꾼들에게 포위된다. 무고한 사람들까지 죽음을 당할 정도의 격렬한 총격전 끝에 악당 5명은 끝내 추격의 올가미를 빠져 나간다. 리더인 파이크 비숍, 충성스런 더치, 불만투성이의 소치 형제와 이들의 앙숙인 멕시코 출신의 앤젤. 여기에 왕년에 총잡이로 이름을 떨치던 시키즈까지 가세해 여섯명이 된 일행은 추격자들의 끈질긴 추격을 역시 끈질기게 피해간다. 이들 일행에게 악당 두목 아파치는 무기를 수송하는 기차를 털라고 사주를 한다. 와일드 번치 일당이 감행한 이 작전은 성공을 거두지만 아파치는 앤젤을 인질로 잡는다. 무기를 인도하는 과정에서 앤젤이 무기를 빼돌렸다는 것이다. 파이크를 비롯한 나머지 와일드 번치 일당은 동료 앤젤을 구하기 위해 결과가 뻔한 싸움을 감행한다.

남북전쟁이 끝난 뒤, 제임스 랭든 대령이 이끄는 남부군 대대와 그의 가족들은 미국 땅을 떠나 멀리 멕시코로 향한다. 전쟁에 패한 미국땅에서 더 이상 살고 싶지 않은 그들은 멕시코에서 새로운 삶을 개척하고자 한다. 한편 북군의 존 헨리 토마스 대령은 군복을 벗고 황야로 돌아가 부하들과 함께 말을 돌본다. 3천 마리의 말을 소유한 존과 그 부하들은 이제 그 말을 팔아 고향으로 돌아갈 것이다. 제임스 일행과 존의 일행은 우연히 만나게 되고 남군과 북군이었다는 약간의 거리감 속에서도 서로에게 신뢰를 느낀다. 멕시코 국왕이 보낸 특사들이 말을 사러 존을 찾아오고 그들은 무사히 멕시코까지 말을 데리고 가면 그때 돈을 지불하겠다고 한다. 제임스와 존은 인디언들의 공격을 같이 막아내는 등 위기상황을 서로 도우면서 가까워지고, 그 와중에 제임스의 딸과 존의 양자인 인디언 청년은 서로에게 사랑을 느낀다. 멕시코에 도착해 국왕의 부하들에게 큰 환대와 함께 환영파티를 받은 제임스 일행. 그러나 그들은 순식간에 돌변해 총으로 위협한다. 그들은 국왕의 부하가 아니라 혁명군이었던 것. 혁명군들이 원하는 것은 혁명에 필요한 말. 그들의 리더는 제임스에게 다음날 정오까지 존이 가진 말들을 가져오지 않으면 남은 사람들을 총살하겠다고 한다. 양키에게 자존심을 굽힐 수 없다던 그는 할 수 없이 존을 찾아가고 존과 부하들은 함께 고민하는데....

쟈파타(마론 브란도 분)는 멕시코의 대통령 디아즈(페이 루프 분)를 만난다. 디아즈는 전제군주처럼 군림하면서 농민들을 착취하고 있었으므로 자파타는 그것을 디아즈에게 지적했고, 농민들은 농토에 경계를 확실히 두기를 원한다고 그의 동의를 요구했다. 디아즈는 자파타의 끊임없는 요구에 시달림을 받았고, 마침내는 내키지 않은 승인을 하게 되었다. 그러나 어느날 경찰이 자파타의 마을을 습격하여 무차별 살육을 감행했다. 자파타는 반격을 했으나, 그러한 행동이 곧 그를 무법자로 몰게 했고, 그와 동료들은 산속으로 도피할 수밖에 없었다. 산속에서 그는 정치 운동가이자 기자인 페르난도 아기레(조셉 와이즈먼 분)와 혁명을 꿈꾸는 여러 동지들을 만나게 된다. 그들은 자파타가 자신들의 혁명의 리더로 활약해 주기를 원하고 있었고, 경찰의 잔혹한 행위를 보고 격분한 자파티는 그 뜻을 받아들이게 되는데...
