슬로컴 가의 둘째 아들 이그비(키어란 컬킨)는 집안의 골치덩어리이다. 정신 분열증으로 요양원에 있는 아버지(빌 풀만) 자기 자신밖에 모르고 진정제 중독인 어머니(수잔 서랜든)어려서부터 찬바람만 부는 사이인 수재 형(라이언 필립) 어찌보면 부족할것 없는 생활이지만 이그비는 늘 여기에서 있다가는 정신적으로 압사 당해 죽을 것 같다는 압박을 느끼며 집과 학교에서 벗어날 생각만 꿈꾼다. 형, 올리(라이언 필립)는 컬럼비아 대에 입학한 수재인데 비해 이그비는 툭하면 부모님 호출은 기본이고 학교에서는 골치를 앓는 말썽꾼이라서 자존심 강하고 강압적인 어머니(수잔 서랜든)는 이그비를 학교에 넣어 버리지만 그걸로 탈출 의지를 막기엔 역부족이었다. 매사에 신중한 이그비의 성격은 세련된 엄마나 올리와 다른 유전자를 지닌 것처럼 보인다. 이그비는 엄마를 ‘미미’ 형을 ‘네오 파시즘’’젊은 공화당원’이라며 반 조롱식으로 비난하며 기회만 되면 집을 탈출할 궁리만 한다.
