글렌 홀랜드는 위대한 교향곡을 작곡하고 싶다는 꿈을 이루기 위해 음악 선생이 된다. 1964년 어느 아침 홀랜드는 선생으로서의 아침을 시작한다. 존 F. 케네디 고등학교에 첫출근한 홀랜드는 어디로 가야할 지 길을 잃고 만다. 이때 홀랜드가 지도해야 할 교향악단이 그의 첫 날을 반긴다. 그러나 홀랜드의 첫 음악 수업은 학생들과 한마디의 대화도 없이 끝나버리고 말았고, 교향악단과의 연주 연습은 불협 화음만을 남긴 채 홀랜드의 머리 속을 혼란스럽게 만든다. 학생 중의 자신을 재능 없는 멍청이라고 생각하는 교향악단의 클라리넷 연주자인 게르트루드 랭에게 홀랜드는 자신감을 불어 넣어준다. 1965년도 졸업식에서 교향악단의 연주는 게르트루드 랭의 클라리넷 독주로 더욱 빛나게 된다. 이후 학교 밴드부가 만들어졌고, 홀랜드의 음악 시간은 음악의 역사 대신 비틀즈와 롤링 스톤스의 락앤롤로 채워졌다. 그러나 어느날 자신의 아들인 콜트레인 홀랜드가 듣지 못한다는 사실을 알게 된 홀랜드는 자신의 음악을 아들과 함께 나누지 못한는 현실에 좌절을 겪는데...
