Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark (2011)

FBI에 쫓기는 반전운동 가족의 삶과 갈등을 그린 영화이다. 1971년, 아서(저드 허쉬)와 애니(크리스틴 라티)는 베트남 반전운동을 위한 실험실 폭파로 경비원을 실명하게 만들면서 FBI의 추적을 받는다. 그들 부부는 FBI의 추적을 피하기 위해 떠돌이 생활을 시작한다. 그들은 미국 각지를 떠돌아 다니고 옮기는 지역마다 이름과 직업을 바꾼다. 피아노에 천부적인 재능이 있는 아들 대니(리버 피닉스)는 줄리어드 음악원에 합격하지만 가족의 특수한 상황으로 입학을 포기해야 하는 일에 생기면서 갈등이 시작된다.

1938년에 MGM(Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer)이 제작한 흑백영화이다. 노먼 토록(Norman Taurog) 감독이 연출하였고 존 미핸(John Meehan)과 도어 쉐어리(Dore Schary)가 각본을 썼다. 시드니 와그너(Sidney Wagner)가 촬영을 맡았고 스펜서 트레이시(Spencer Tracy), 미키 루니(Mickey Rooney), 헨리 헐(Henry Hull), 레슬리 펜턴(Leslie Fenton) 등이 출연하였다. 집 없는 소년들의 보호소 보이스 타운을 운영한 에드워드 플래너건(Edward Flanagan) 신부의 실화를 영화화한 작품이다. 플래너건 신부는 한 죄수의 이야기를 들은 후에 온갖 어려움을 무릅쓰고 보이스 타운을 시작한다. 누군가 조금이라도 관심과 애정을 기울인다면 소년들은 나쁜 길로 빠지지 않고 잘 자랄 거라는 플래너건 신부의 철학은 네브라스카주 오마하시에 보이스 타운을 만들면서 절정에 달한다. 보호소 운영기금을 모으는 데 어려움을 겪던 신부는 가장 든든한 후원자들은 그를 신뢰하는 평범한 사람들이라는 사실을 깨닫는다. 그중에서도 유대인 전당포 업자는 신부가 꿈을 실현하는 데 돕기 위해서 아낌없이 지갑을 연다. 플래너건 신부와 소년들이 악당을 붙잡아 받은 상금으로 보이스 타운을 살리는 자립을 위한 투쟁을 담은 이야기도 펼쳐진다. 그리고 범법자의 동생인 불량스런 소년 마쉬가 처음에는 거만한 반역자로 보이스 타운에서 여러 번 도망쳐서 형이 속한 깡패들 무리에 들어갔다가 신부의 애정 어린 관심으로 새롭게 태어나서 보이스 타운의 자치 정부에서 권위, 책임감, 존경을 받는 위치에까지 오르는 이야기가 감동적으로 엮어진다.

절대왕정이 무르익던 18세기 덴마크. 편집증을 앓고 있는 왕 크리스티안7세를 치료하기 위해 고용된 독일인 의사 요한은 뛰어난 언변과 어린 왕과 왕비를 감싸주는 포용력으로 그들의 신임을 얻어 나랏일에 참여를 하게 된다. 시대에 걸맞지 않은 자유로운 사상과 파격적인 개혁법안으로 귀족들의 견제를 받게 되지만 그런 자유로운 사상이 왕비 캐롤라인의 생각과도 맞닿아 둘은 점점 가까워지며, 급기야는 비밀스러운 만남을 갖게 된다. 자신들의 이익에 침해하는 법안을 제안하는 요한을 못마땅하게 본 귀족들에 의해 둘의 스캔들이 발각 되고 결국 요한은 재판에 회부된다.

송세걸은 주변 5백리 안에서는 당할자가 없다는 평이 나있는 명 변호사였다. 그러나 그의 아내 이씨는 몇 명이나 아이를 낳기만하면 잇달아 죽는것이 남편의 변론으로 패소한 사람들의 원한의 결과라고 생각해서, 한창 명성을 날리는 변호업을 중단할 것을 애걸해서 마침내 남편을 은퇴시킨다. 변호사업을 그만두고 여관을 차린 송세걸이 무료한 나날을 보내던 중, 그의 아내는 우연한 기회에 양수진이라는 여자가, 남편을 죽였다는 누명을 쓰고, 만삭의 몸으로 시달리고 있는것을 보고, 남편의 반대에도 불구하고 집안으로 거둬들여, 원님에게 그녀의 무고함을 호소한다. 신임현감은 송세걸의 명성을 익히 들어왔고, 은연중에 시기하던 현감은, 송세걸이 은퇴해서 대결할 기회를 놓친게 안타깝던 차에 이씨가 건방지게 관가의 송사에 관여하는 것을 괘씸히 여겨 이씨에게 형을 선고한다. 아내가 형을 받고 돌아온것을 본 송세걸은 은퇴선언을 번복하고 다시 율사가 되어, 양수진의 사건을 맡아 관가에 항소를 한다. 한편, 양수진의 남편을 죽이고 재산을 가로챈 범인은 송세걸이 사건을 맡았다는 소식에 당황해서 금 5천냥을 현감에게 뇌물로 주고 범행을 목격한 양수진의 몸종을 수회해서 반대증언을 하게 한다. 재판결과, 몸종의 증언이 결정적인 영향을 미쳐, 송세걸은 생전 처음 패소한다. 타락한 관리들의 작태에 울분을 터뜨린 송세걸은 마침 출두한 암행어사에게 항소해서 탐관오리들의 비리와 잘못된 재판의 번복을 요구하는데...
